I would like to solicit opinions from the WG to the abovementioned question= . ------- Below some additional thoughts from me: One comment during the WG session was that why the gateway could not postpo= ne a packet. In case of CoAP the default retransmission timeout is 2-3 seco= nds (ACK_TIMEOUT * ACK_RANDOM_FACTOR). This provides very little room for g= ateway to maneuver as it has to leave some time for the actual round trip t= ime. If the gateway could add only one second of additional latency, it wou= ld not really help at all due 3GPP networks' design. If local nodes would b= e already transmitting very close to each other they would already avoid th= e radio activation costs - and if transmitting far from each other, the one= second would not make any difference. The postponing would start helping o= nly if packets could be delayed for tens of seconds or minutes (or tens of = minutes). But I don't believe clients would be able to accept such latencie= s without using some delay tolerant protocols. If packets, such as IP packets or perhaps CoAP packets, would be colored fo= r QoS handling, then things would be different. But that kind of schemes ar= e not in place AFAIK. Proxies could provide some help, but would come with all the trouble of pro= xying. The draft proposal allows window intervals that should apply to several sce= narios.=20 - For example, if the gateway is a mobile handset with half an hour interva= l used for waking up internal applications, the handset could share this in= terval to devices it is acting as gateway for - hence during a single wake-= up cycle internal apps would be woken up to do their tricks and served 6low= pan nodes to transmit their resource updates. - In another example, in some deployment where more frequent updates are ne= eded, a headless battery-powered gateway could configure 30 second window i= nterval for local nodes, and possibly save significantly (e.g. when compare= d to waking up every 15 seconds due unsynchronized local nodes). The incentive for 6lowpan nodes (or other types of nodes) to follow the tr= ansmission window guidance for periodic communications is clear: the longer= the battery on the gateway lasts, the longer the node using the gateway *h= as* Internet connectivity.. The proposed solution will help as long as there are at least two periodica= lly communicating nodes: - a mobile handset with email/IM/etc app and a laptop connected through it = (e.g. via WiFi tethering) - a mobile handset with email/IM/etc and one 6lowpan node connected through= it (e.g. via BT tethering) - a headless gateway and two 6lowpan nodes connected through it (e.g. 802.1= 5.4) Best regards, Teemu From nobody Mon Apr 7 06:46:55 2014 Return-Path: X-Original-To: 6lo@ietfa.amsl.com Delivered-To: 6lo@ietfa.amsl.com Received: from localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 532D01A0708 for <6lo@ietfa.amsl.com>; Mon, 7 Apr 2014 06:46:51 -0700 (PDT) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -102.6 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-102.6 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[BAYES_00=-1.9, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_LOW=-0.7, SPF_PASS=-0.001, USER_IN_WHITELIST=-100] autolearn=ham Received: from mail.ietf.org ([4.31.198.44]) by localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id Hp7s09n3t0W9 for <6lo@ietfa.amsl.com>; Mon, 7 Apr 2014 06:46:45 -0700 (PDT) Received: from na01-bl2-obe.outbound.protection.outlook.com (mail-bl2lp0204.outbound.protection.outlook.com [207.46.163.204]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 07AB41A0426 for <6lo@ietf.org>; Mon, 7 Apr 2014 06:46:44 -0700 (PDT) Received: from BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com (10.141.141.25) by BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com (10.141.141.25) with Microsoft SMTP Server (TLS) id 15.0.913.9; Mon, 7 Apr 2014 13:46:38 +0000 Received: from BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com ([10.141.141.25]) by BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com ([10.141.141.25]) with mapi id 15.00.0913.002; Mon, 7 Apr 2014 13:46:38 +0000 From: Dave Thaler To: "Savolainen Teemu (Nokia-CTO/Tampere)" , "draft-ietf-6lo-btle@tools.ietf.org" Thread-Topic: Comments on draft-ietf-6lo-btle-00 Thread-Index: Ac9IgprZdpBKHuPxR0ij8vNKky8yVwBMnLFQAiVgg0AAB08HcA== Date: Mon, 7 Apr 2014 13:46:37 +0000 Message-ID: <75cff94a449642c39a36a0fe9ebcf2ed@BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com> References: <529718aa87a44aae8cd0124670f926ed@BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com> <916CE6CF87173740BC8A2CE44309696204A09BF1@008-AM1MPN1-053.mgdnok.nokia.com>, <916CE6CF87173740BC8A2CE44309696204A2DA51@008-AM1MPN1-051.mgdnok.nokia.com> In-Reply-To: <916CE6CF87173740BC8A2CE44309696204A2DA51@008-AM1MPN1-051.mgdnok.nokia.com> Accept-Language: en-US Content-Language: en-US X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: x-originating-ip: [76.112.113.148] x-forefront-prvs: 0174BD4BDA x-forefront-antispam-report: SFV:NSPM; SFS:(10009001)(428001)(377454003)(189002)(199002)(74502001)(80976001)(83072002)(47446002)(76482001)(56776001)(95416001)(92566001)(76786001)(81816001)(47736001)(74662001)(81542001)(76576001)(81342001)(31966008)(49866001)(85852003)(74316001)(98676001)(16236675002)(66066001)(93516002)(81686001)(54356001)(47976001)(46102001)(94316002)(99396002)(74366001)(54316002)(4396001)(86362001)(33646001)(93136001)(95666003)(69226001)(87936001)(85306002)(83322001)(2656002)(97336001)(59766001)(74876001)(77982001)(94946001)(63696002)(80022001)(20776003)(87266001)(97186001)(50986001)(19580405001)(56816005)(65816001)(79102001)(53806001)(74706001)(19580395003)(76796001)(90146001)(24736002); DIR:OUT; SFP:1101; SCL:1; SRVR:BY2PR03MB412; H:BY2PR03MB412.namprd03.prod.outlook.com; FPR:BC7CD427.AF125C61.3D19C8B.8ED8E960.202D9; MLV:sfv; PTR:InfoNoRecords; MX:1; A:1; LANG:en; received-spf: None (: microsoft.com does not designate permitted sender hosts) Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="_000_75cff94a449642c39a36a0fe9ebcf2edBY2PR03MB412namprd03pro_" MIME-Version: 1.0 X-OriginatorOrg: microsoft.onmicrosoft.com Archived-At: http://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/6lo/Lo4_djWyHJV9rVNNwoz8Ntd_8SY Cc: "6lo@ietf.org" <6lo@ietf.org> Subject: Re: [6lo] Comments on draft-ietf-6lo-btle-00 X-BeenThere: 6lo@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.15 Precedence: list List-Id: "Mailing list for the 6lo WG for Internet Area issues in IPv6 over constrained node networks." <6lo.ietf.org> List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2014 13:46:51 -0000 --_000_75cff94a449642c39a36a0fe9ebcf2edBY2PR03MB412namprd03pro_ Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1256" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Yes I think it should mention MLD snooping as either a MUST or a SHOULD. If not, then "link-local" doesn't belong in the quote and of > course a bunch of protocols just won't work > (just like they don't work on any other NBMA link). Typically some sort of multicast/broadcast emulation has been provided for NBMA links. For ATM, RFC 2684 specified a multicast address resolution server (MARS), which could be used in conjunction with a multicast server, while the ATM Forum's LAN Emulation included a multicast/broadcast emulation service. I don't recall that a multicast emulation service was provided for frame relay, but frame relay was largely used as an inexpensive replacement for point-to-point leased lines, not as a LAN. I have, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, called this the IETF's "make everything look like an Ethernet strategy". Well, I thought it was a joke, until someone proposed this for manets. In all fairness, I believe this was proposed by a netconf person, not a manet person. But, perhaps the lesson is that much of the IETF doesn't really think much about non-tradition media and networks. -tjs From nobody Mon Apr 7 15:56:44 2014 Return-Path: X-Original-To: To reduce storage space I want to propose a modification. I see that objects are defined with name lowpanObject, and that a SEQUENCE lowpanIfStatsTable with sequence attributes lowpanIfObject is defined. I wonder whether the lowpanObjects cannot be suppressed because their contents is the same as the value of all lowpanIfObjects summed over all interfaces. Given that for small devices only one interface is present this modification would save quite some space for those. For larger devices the extra transport of the value of all interfaces instead of the sum seems acceptable to me. But then you require that _all_ implementations support per interface statistics. The current setup allows per interface statistics but does not require them. Note that you can sum things up in the agent if you happen to have per interface statistics and hence additional storage is not required for the counters. /js -- Juergen Schoenwaelder Jacobs University Bremen gGmbH Phone: +49 421 200 3587 Campus Ring 1, 28759 Bremen, Germany Fax: +49 421 200 3103 From nobody Wed Apr 30 06:36:46 2014 Return-Path: X-Original-To: 6lo@ietfa.amsl.com Delivered-To: 6lo@ietfa.amsl.com Received: from localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1676D1A08CB for <6lo@ietfa.amsl.com>; Wed, 30 Apr 2014 06:36:45 -0700 (PDT) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: 0.673 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=0.673 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[BAYES_00=-1.9, DEAR_SOMETHING=1.973, J_CHICKENPOX_46=0.6] autolearn=no Received: from mail.ietf.org ([4.31.198.44]) by localhost (ietfa.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id kR5Nx5P5npYv for <6lo@ietfa.amsl.com>; Wed, 30 Apr 2014 06:36:44 -0700 (PDT) Received: from uillean.fuaim.com (uillean.fuaim.com [206.197.161.140]) by ietfa.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3084C1A08C8 for <6lo@ietf.org>; Wed, 30 Apr 2014 06:36:44 -0700 (PDT) Received: from clairseach.fuaim.com (clairseach-high.fuaim.com [206.197.161.158]) (using TLSv1 with cipher ADH-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by uillean.fuaim.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id F393E880DB for <6lo@ietf.org>; Wed, 30 Apr 2014 06:36:42 -0700 (PDT) Received: from 1025238104.rudm2.ra.johnshopkins.edu (addr16212925014.ippl.jhmi.edu [162.129.250.14]) (using TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA (128/128 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by clairseach.fuaim.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5677871B0001 for <6lo@ietf.org>; Wed, 30 Apr 2014 06:36:42 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <5360FC68.3050008@innovationslab.net> Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2014 09:36:40 -0400 From: Brian Haberman User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.7; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/24.4.0 MIME-Version: 1.0 To: "6lo@ietf.org" <6lo@ietf.org> References: <98CD33A61CF47E4382945F1FE4F34C361C02A76E66@Bowmore.bluetooth.local> In-Reply-To: <98CD33A61CF47E4382945F1FE4F34C361C02A76E66@Bowmore.bluetooth.local> X-Enigmail-Version: 1.6 X-Forwarded-Message-Id: <98CD33A61CF47E4382945F1FE4F34C361C02A76E66@Bowmore.bluetooth.local> Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha512; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="Jdw8WOuafiRAPalJsBSbGnWLpBjTsTsUk" Archived-At: http://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/6lo/hUu5mImCM188TTg3PeZYyO55s-g Subject: [6lo] Update from BT SIG X-BeenThere: 6lo@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.15 Precedence: list List-Id: "Mailing list for the 6lo WG for Internet Area issues in IPv6 over constrained node networks." <6lo.ietf.org> List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 30 Apr 2014 13:36:45 -0000 This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 4880 and 3156) --Jdw8WOuafiRAPalJsBSbGnWLpBjTsTsUk Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable All, We received the following e-mail from the BT SIG executive director related to the IPv6 over BTLE draft. IETF standardization-wise the document is in the IESG process, and hence in the late stages as well. This solution has one major open item: it requires an allocation of a new fixed L2CAP Channel Identifier (to distinguish IPv6 from other BT-LE traffic). As the IETF and BT SIG do not have official liaisons, we are approaching you with this email to ask if, and how, it would be possible to have a fixed channel identifier allocated for the IPv6 over Bluetooth Low-Energy specification." The Bluetooth SIG has responded to your request by doing the following: 1. Accommodated for your request in the Bluetooth Core Specification v4.1 by introducing a new L2CAP feature called Connection Oriented Channels. 2. The Internet Working Group is developing an "Internet Protocol Support Service" (IPSS) and "Internet Protocol Support Profile" (IPSP). The Bluetooth SIG believes these specifications will meet your requirements. IPSS does not allocate a fixed L2CAP channel for 6LoWPAN, instead it proposes to use L2CAP Connection Oriented Channels. It is therefore recommended that the IETF reference these specifications. The Bluetooth SIG intends to perform interoperability testing on these features this summer and fall. Final adoption of the specifications can occur approximately six weeks after completing this interoperability testing. IETF stan= dardization-wise the document is in the IESG process, and hence in the late= stages as well. This solution has one major open item: it requires an allocation of a new f= ixed L2CAP Channel Identifier (to distinguish IPv6 from other BT-LE traffic= ). As the IETF and BT SIG do not have official liaisons, we are approaching yo= u with this email to ask if, and how, it would be possible to have a fixed = channel identifier allocated for the IPv6 over Bluetooth Low-Energy specifi= cation." The Bluetooth SIG has responded to your request by doing the following: 1. Accommodated for your request in the Bluetooth Core Specification v4.1 by introducing a new L2CAP feature called Connection Ori= ented Channels. 2. The Internet Working Group is developing an "Internet Protocol Support Service" (IPSS) and "Internet Protocol Support Profile" (IPSP). The Bluetooth SIG believes these specifications will meet your requi= rements. IPSS does not allocate a fixed L2CAP channel for 6LoWPAN, instead = it proposes to use L2CAP Connection Oriented Channels. It is therefore recommended that the IETF reference these specificat= ions. The Bluetooth SIG intends to perform interoperability testing on these feat= ures this summer and fall. Final adoption of the specifications can occur a= pproximately six weeks after completing this interoperability testing. We briefly discussed this off-list, and they suggested that raised this on this list. Here's the summary of our exchange: Samita and Ulrich kindly noted that at least some 6lo document does IPv6 address compression on the assumption that the IID contains the underlying hardware address. On the other hand we noted that: * Some OSes (notably Microsoft Windows) have moved away from embedding MAC addresses in the IIDs (to mitigate the issues discussed in ). * Additionally, there's an existing 6man recommendation (in RFC 7136) against expecting any semantics in the IPv6 IIDs -- the IID should be treated as a string of opaque bits. Dave Thaler had already posted some related comments on this list that are related to this issue. Please see: * As noted by Dave (and also by myself), there seem to be some statements in 6lo documents which seem to go against some 6man recommendations. That said, in the specific case of header compression, you might have a case to go against the "SHOULD NOT" in -- although expecting specific semantics in the IPv6 IIDs still goes against RFC 7136. All the above said, we still wonder if there are any 6lo-related documents we should include in the "Updates" of draft-ietf-6man-default-iids. P.S.: I apologize if some of the above comments are not that timely... but I was not following the 6lo work. Thanks!
