I'm sure this kind of > deployment was already considered earlier - is there any > information available about that? Per user keys would be a bad idea. Consider how TPA-SSP can replace key distribution: http://www1.tools.ietf.org/wg/dkim/draft-otis-dkim-tpa-ssp-01.txt Rather than distributing keys, the mail-server is authorized in a simple and scalable fashion instead. This better protects DKIM from a calamity when a private key becomes compromised at a highly shared MTA. Using TPA-SSP, the resulting security warning would be limited to a single domain. When distributing keys are employed, a single compromised server might then impact thousands of domains. A compromised server is not that uncommon. Reporting thousands of domains have been compromised when a single server has been compromised key will result in a much greater loss of confidence. Of course, distributing keys imposes greater administrative costs as well. -Doug _______________________________________________ NOTE WELL: This list operates according to http://mipassoc.org/dkim/ietf-list-rules.html From toij6565@yahoo.co.jp Wed Aug 08 10:34:13 2007 Return-path: Received: from [10.90.34.44] (helo=chiedprmail1.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IImc1-0000Fx-Mk for IETF-DKIM-ARCHIVE@LISTS.IETF.ORG; Wed, 08 Aug 2007 10:34:13 -0400 Received: from [218.10.156.100] (helo=a-net.ne.jp) by chiedprmail1.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IImc0-0000eY-N6 for IETF-DKIM-ARCHIVE@LISTS.IETF.ORG; Wed, 08 Aug 2007 10:34:13 -0400 Received: from enuysxil6 (unknown [214.169.226.100]) by smtp48 (Coremail) with SMTP id kh1v4xejHVYdXmf0.1 for ; Wed, 08 Aug 2007 22:34:12 +0800 (CST) X-Originating-IP: [214.169.226.100] Subject: =?iso-2022-jp?B?GyRCQEZGIyRfJGgkMxsoQg==?= From: =?shift-jis?B?aW5mb3JtYXRpb24=?= To: X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0021_01C7C320.F3C59310" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 X-Spam-Score: 2.5 (++) X-Scan-Signature: 827a2a57ca7ab0837847220f447e8d56 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0021_01C7C320.F3C59310 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-2022-jp" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable =1B$BL5Bj%I%-%e%a%s%H=1B(B

This draft is a work item of the Domain Keys Identified Mail Working Group of the IETF. Title : Requirements for a DKIM Signing Practices Protocol Author(s) : M. Thomas Filename : draft-ietf-dkim-ssp-requirements-05.txt Pages : 24 Date : 2007-8-15 DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) provides a cryptographic mechanism for domains to assert responsibility for the messages they handle. A related mechanism will allow an administrator to publish various statements about their DKIM signing practices. This document defines requirements for this mechanism, distinguishing between those that must be satisified (MUST), and those that are highly desirable (SHOULD). A URL for this Internet-Draft is: http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-dkim-ssp-requirements-05.txt To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message. You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce to change your subscription settings. Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username "anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in, type "cd internet-drafts" and then "get draft-ietf-dkim-ssp-requirements-05.txt". A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail. Send a message to: mailserv@ietf.org. In the body type: "FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-dkim-ssp-requirements-05.txt". NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE" command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with "multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on how to manipulate these messages. If you have not yet declared your interest to participant, but wish to, please let me know. Equally important is joining the event mailing list at interop@dkim.org. To subscribe, go to: The list archive already contains assorted, exciting postings about event logistics, and the like. Remote participation will be permitted, but physical presence is strongly encouraged. Note that it will be possible for a participant to be at the site, but use their remote facilities for the testing -- particularly handy for service providers with their own implementations. To be specific: the purpose of the event is to do direct interoperability testing. The details of the testing are being developed by those intending to participate, using the event mailing list, beforehand. Typical Internet protocol interoperability events are for conducting engineering testing, rather than as a milestone formality such as "certification". It will also have only a small amount of joint marketing. Participants are specifically prohibited from using the results to suggest one vendor's superiority over another. What happens at an interop stays at an interop... The schedule is designed to permit participants from North America to be away from home for only one night, traveling the morning of the first day and returning the evening of the second. Ten organizations have already indicated their intent to participate. d/ -- Dave Crocker Brandenburg InternetWorking bbiw.net _______________________________________________ NOTE WELL: This list operates according to http://mipassoc.org/dkim/ietf-list-rules.html From ietf-dkim-bounces@mipassoc.org Fri Aug 17 11:40:35 2007 Return-path: Received: from [10.91.34.44] (helo=ietf-mx.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IM3wB-0007G5-0N for ietf-dkim-archive@lists.ietf.org; Fri, 17 Aug 2007 11:40:35 -0400 Received: from mail.songbird.com ([208.184.79.10]) by ietf-mx.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IM3w9-0008N6-It for ietf-dkim-archive@lists.ietf.org; Fri, 17 Aug 2007 11:40:34 -0400 Received: from mail.songbird.com (sb7.songbird.com [127.0.0.1]) by mail.songbird.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11) with ESMTP id l7HFbMc4018825; Fri, 17 Aug 2007 08:37:31 -0700 Received: from [10.253.242.168] (m010f36d0.tmodns.net [208.54.15.1]) (authenticated bits=0) by mail.songbird.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11) with ESMTP id l7H05DLW029235 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Thu, 16 Aug 2007 17:05:14 -0700 Message-ID: <46C4A2BA.60403@bbiw.net> Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2007 15:17:14 -0400 From: Dave Crocker Organization: Brandenburg InternetWorking User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (Windows/20070728) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailman-Approved-At: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 08:37:21 -0700 Subject: [ietf-dkim] Survey: Reputation string, to use from DKIM X-BeenThere: ietf-dkim@mipassoc.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: IETF DKIM Discussion List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: ietf-dkim-bounces@mipassoc.org Errors-To: ietf-dkim-bounces@mipassoc.org X-Spam-Score: 4.1 (++++) X-Scan-Signature: e1e48a527f609d1be2bc8d8a70eb76cb Folks, I've had a brief exchange, with a few folks recently, that suggests quite a bit of ambiguity about the DKIM-related information to be used for assessing reputation/accreditation. Simply put: When you validate a DKIM signature, what information do you (intend to) use for querying your reputation/accreditation data bases? So I'd like to ask folks to privately send me their own views on what string or strings are intended to be used. I am asking for private replies only to me so that each response is essentially free of influence from others. I will then summarize the results and we can start enjoying a bit of discussion about them. To be clear: Of course a site making reputation assessments can and will use whatever they wish. So the issue is not restricting their freedom. Rather, the question is about DKIM's precise (standardized) semantics. Note that DKIM -base declares that the purpose of DKIM is to "permit a signing domain to assert responsibility for a message". So the purpose of this survey is to ask what string you believe is intended to represent that responsibility? Thanks. d/ -- Dave Crocker Brandenburg InternetWorking bbiw.net _______________________________________________ NOTE WELL: This list operates according to http://mipassoc.org/dkim/ietf-list-rules.html From ietf-dkim-bounces@mipassoc.org Fri Aug 17 12:43:29 2007 Return-path: Received: from [10.91.34.44] (helo=ietf-mx.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IM4v3-0001I8-7b for ietf-dkim-archive@lists.ietf.org; Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:43:29 -0400 Received: from mail.songbird.com ([208.184.79.10]) by ietf-mx.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IM4v1-0002Eh-Uh for ietf-dkim-archive@lists.ietf.org; Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:43:29 -0400 Received: from mail.songbird.com (sb7.songbird.com [127.0.0.1]) by mail.songbird.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11) with ESMTP id l7HGe0vL000433; Fri, 17 Aug 2007 09:40:09 -0700 Received: from [192.168.0.2] (ppp-67-124-91-165.dsl.pltn13.pacbell.net [67.124.91.165]) (authenticated bits=0) by mail.songbird.com (8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11) with ESMTP id l7HGRHiN030124 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA bits=256 verify=NO); Fri, 17 Aug 2007 09:27:18 -0700 Message-ID: <46C5CC75.1060703@bbiw.net> Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 09:27:33 -0700 From: Dave Crocker Organization: Brandenburg InternetWorking User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 (Windows/20070728) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: undisclosed-recipients:; References: <46C4A2BA.60403@bbiw.net> In-Reply-To: <46C4A2BA.60403@bbiw.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailman-Approved-At: Fri, 17 Aug 2007 09:39:58 -0700 Subject: [ietf-dkim] Re: Survey: Reputation string, to use from DKIM X-BeenThere: ietf-dkim@mipassoc.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.5 Precedence: list List-Id: IETF DKIM Discussion List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Sender: ietf-dkim-bounces@mipassoc.org Errors-To: ietf-dkim-bounces@mipassoc.org X-Spam-Score: 0.0 (/) X-Scan-Signature: f607d15ccc2bc4eaf3ade8ffa8af02a0 Dave Crocker wrote: > Simply put: > > When you validate a DKIM signature, what information do you > (intend to) use for querying your reputation/accreditation > data bases? Folks, I appreciate the responses I'm getting. Unfortunately I was not clear enough about what I am asking for. Most folks seem to be a bit confused. So let me clarify: I am looking for you to tell me exactly what DKIM field(s) you would use. Please cite using a single letter and an equal sign. That is, the parameter value(s) as specified in the DKIM -base documentn(RFC 4871). It's ok if you haven't implemented anything yet. I'm asking about your reading and understanding of the specification document, not your software engineering work. There are no wrong answers. I am trying to understand the variations of interpretations. I already know the variations are significant. That is what prompted my sending out this query. So the goal is to find out as much as possible about them. Which fields do folks think they should/would use? Do any specific fields dominate the community's understanding? Please note that this does not involve correlating the information with any other RFC2822 or RFC2821 fields. That is a higher-level function that occurs beyond the task of basic signature validation. So your response to the current query would be the information that you might feed into this later correlation. The scope of information from which you should draw is strictly about DKIM-specific parameters in the DKIM-Signature field of a message and the DKIM TXT RR in the DNS. In other words, what is specified in RFC4871. Thanks! d/ ps. If you have already supplied the parameter reference, you do not need to do it again. -- Dave Crocker Brandenburg InternetWorking bbiw.net _______________________________________________ NOTE WELL: This list operates according to http://mipassoc.org/dkim/ietf-list-rules.html From toij6565@yahoo.co.jp Sun Aug 19 05:17:19 2007 Return-path: Received: from [10.90.34.44] (helo=chiedprmail1.ietf.org) by megatron.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IMguN-0005bS-6K for IETF-DKIM-ARCHIVE@LISTS.IETF.ORG; Sun, 19 Aug 2007 05:17:19 -0400 Received: from [60.14.185.73] (helo=a-net.ne.jp) by chiedprmail1.ietf.org with esmtp (Exim 4.43) id 1IMguL-0004eU-Sn for IETF-DKIM-ARCHIVE@LISTS.IETF.ORG; Sun, 19 Aug 2007 05:17:19 -0400 Received: from lpgtd6 (unknown [189.214.218.241]) by smtp92 (Coremail) with SMTP id FrRdfh3z7ndJUJBt.1 for ; Sun, 19 Aug 2007 17:17:23 +0800 (CST) X-Originating-IP: [189.214.218.241] Subject: =?iso-2022-jp?B?GyRCQEZGIyRfJGgkMxsoQg==?= From: =?shift-jis?B?R09HTyBUVg==?= To: X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_0021_01C7C320.F3C59310" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2800.1106 X-Spam-Score: 2.5 (++) X-Scan-Signature: 827a2a57ca7ab0837847220f447e8d56 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0021_01C7C320.F3C59310 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-2022-jp" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable =1B$BL5Bj%I%-%e%a%s%H=1B(B
