That should be optional, so LDAP implementations are not burdened with a requrement to support charset encoding if they do not actually need it. If a file or entry has 'charset: ...' this should not only affect 'attr: val', not 'attr:: val' and 'attr:< file'. The two latter may contain non-text data, e.g. a jpeg picture. So an app which writes latin-1 may still need to convert to utf-8, in case it needs to write a value which must be base64-encoded. E.g. a value which contains a newline. A fix would be to have two base64 attribute syntaxes: one which is charset-converted after base64-decoding, and one which is not. A looser grammar would be useful too. Allow an LDIF file with no entries. Extra CRLFs at the end of the file. I have various notes about wishes for LDIF spread around in my mailbox... Probably I should have undertaken to update LDIF format myself, but I never seem to get around it. For instance, I'd like for LDIF to be able to represent an LDAP Transaction (draft- zeilenga-ldap-txn), to fully cover LDAP search responses, etc.. Also, would be good to include better support for XML encode attribute values. Steven Legg has (had) a good proposal here. Given that there are many who have opinions as to what should be done, and how things should be done, this item screams for a working group. I think it would be good for someone (maybe Yves) to put together a mini-requirements statement: a list of enhancements with MUST, SHOULD, MAY suggestions for the work. I note that I have some reservations concerning some of the suggestions (especially in regards to extending LDIF beyond "interchange" and, in particular "charset:"). But at this point, I think it's best to focus on collection of suggestions, not debate over the merits of each suggestion. -- Kurt _______________________________________________ Ldapext mailing list Ldapext@ietf.org https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ldapext From ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Fri Dec 19 08:02:18 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: ldapext-archive@optimus.ietf.org Delivered-To: ietfarch-ldapext-archive@core3.amsl.com Received: from [127.0.0.1] (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 68F163A68DC; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:02:18 -0800 (PST) X-Original-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Delivered-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id B983B3A6875 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:02:16 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -2.556 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.556 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[AWL=0.043, BAYES_00=-2.599] Received: from mail.ietf.org ([64.170.98.32]) by localhost (core3.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id nqyKcbX3I4OS for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:02:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from idcmail-mo1so.shaw.ca (idcmail-mo1so.shaw.ca [24.71.223.10]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id AFCDB3A68DC for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:02:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from pd2ml2so-ssvc.prod.shaw.ca ([10.0.141.134]) by pd2mo1so-svcs.prod.shaw.ca with ESMTP; 19 Dec 2008 09:02:07 -0700 X-Cloudmark-SP-Filtered: true X-Cloudmark-SP-Result: v=1.0 c=0 a=J6b0bBEkAAAA:8 a=s5kSZ1Hv6n3vlqWt1r4A:9 a=qmjP3VPoM2suCdWsmSwA:7 a=zds6-BDPW3Eb5ggsoWmz4gWLFDMA:4 Received: from s0106003018a62844.cg.shawcable.net (HELO home.zioup.com) ([68.147.37.46]) by pd2ml2so-dmz.prod.shaw.ca with ESMTP; 19 Dec 2008 09:02:07 -0700 Received: from [192.168.2.51] (r51.zioup.net [192.168.2.51]) by home.zioup.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id F2AA4350B6 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 09:02:06 -0700 (MST) Message-ID: <494BC57E.2080505@zioup.com> Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2008 09:02:06 -0700 From: Yves Dorfsman User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 (X11/20081119) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ldapext@ietf.org References: <494A6311.7030205@zioup.com> In-Reply-To: Subject: Re: [ldapext] new version of LDIF X-BeenThere: ldapext@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.9 Precedence: list List-Id: LDAP Extension Working Group List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; Format="flowed" Sender: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Errors-To: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Ludovic Poitou wrote: > > Yes there are still people on the list and we still discuss about LDAP, > extensions and updates to the RFCs. > Please start the discussion here. That's exactly what I'd like to modify. To me, the advantage of LDIF over other formats (say DSML), is that it is easy for a human to read, which makes it a really good format for backups for example. If something's broken, you can diff the versions, see what's wrong and fix it. But, encoding anything other than ASCII into base64 breaks that model for any language that uses characters outside the 7 bit SAFE-CHAR. From my experience with open-ldap and what I have read on the net about the other servers, all the LDAP servers will happily import LDIF files with "plain UTF-8", but they all follow the RFC when it comes to write LDIF, and base 64 encode anything that contains a characters other than SAFE-CHAR. Same thing for the python-ldap library. So really, there isn't a lot that needs to be changed, and it shouldn't disturb the existing products at all, it will just give them another option for writing. -- Yves. http://www.sollers.ca/blog _______________________________________________ Ldapext mailing list Ldapext@ietf.org https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ldapext From ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Fri Dec 19 08:09:18 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: ldapext-archive@optimus.ietf.org Delivered-To: ietfarch-ldapext-archive@core3.amsl.com Received: from [127.0.0.1] (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1370C3A6A29; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:09:18 -0800 (PST) X-Original-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Delivered-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 710923A6A29 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:09:16 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -6.599 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-6.599 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[BAYES_00=-2.599, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED=-4] Received: from mail.ietf.org ([64.170.98.32]) by localhost (core3.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id AzRpja3NEH5a for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:09:15 -0800 (PST) Received: from gmp-eb-inf-1.sun.com (gmp-eb-inf-1.sun.com [192.18.6.21]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0B2743A68DC for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:09:14 -0800 (PST) Received: from fe-emea-09.sun.com (gmp-eb-lb-2-fe2.eu.sun.com [192.18.6.11]) by gmp-eb-inf-1.sun.com (8.13.7+Sun/8.12.9) with ESMTP id mBJG8fEm008159 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 16:09:03 GMT Received: from conversion-daemon.fe-emea-09.sun.com by fe-emea-09.sun.com (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-8.04 (built Feb 28 2007)) id <0KC400401QHNTF00@fe-emea-09.sun.com> (original mail from Ludovic.Poitou@Sun.COM) for ldapext@ietf.org; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 16:08:41 +0000 (GMT) Received: from dhcp-egnb07-211-104.France.Sun.COM ([129.157.211.104]) by fe-emea-09.sun.com (Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.2-8.04 (built Feb 28 2007)) with ESMTPSA id <0KC400KILSTSYZG0@fe-emea-09.sun.com>; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 16:08:17 +0000 (GMT) Date: Fri, 19 Dec 2008 17:08:16 +0100 From: Ludovic Poitou In-reply-to: To: Hallvard B Furuseth Message-id: <295ABDCD-9ABC-4AC5-A56A-66C1B5327440@Sun.COM> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: Apple Mail (2.930.3) References: <494A6311.7030205@zioup.com> Cc: ldapext@ietf.org Subject: Re: [ldapext] new version of LDIF X-BeenThere: ldapext@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.9 Precedence: list List-Id: LDAP Extension Working Group List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; Format="flowed"; DelSp="yes" Sender: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Errors-To: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org On Dec 19, 2008, at 4:14 PM, Hallvard B Furuseth wrote: > Ludovic Poitou writes: >> I personally would like to see full support for UTF-8 characters in >> LDIF, > > yes... > >> and possibly other encodings. > > That should be optional, so LDAP implementations are not burdened > with a > requrement to support charset encoding if they do not actually need > it. Yes, optional. I think this is most useful for input to an LDAP directory server, especially when LDIF data is generated from other sources. In that case I think you're talking of an update to LDIFv1, to align the RFC with current practice. An update most implementations would need to do nothing to support. Is that what you are volunteering to do? If so, a free-for-all with change wishes would be a bit pointless, unless someone else gets inspired to do LDIFv2. Bumping the version number would require work on many implementations and installations: They'd begin to receive LDIFv2 files, and would thus feel pressure to accept them. Of course, which changes to include will still be debatable. _Some_ implementatinos likely follow the RFC and reject 8-bit data. Others may follow the grammar except the UTF-8 part, and would choke on my suggestion to loosen the grammar. An optional feature ("charset:") could likely go in if it doesn't conflict with an existing extension. -- Hallvard _______________________________________________ Ldapext mailing list Ldapext@ietf.org https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ldapext From ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Fri Dec 19 22:08:24 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: ldapext-archive@optimus.ietf.org Delivered-To: ietfarch-ldapext-archive@core3.amsl.com Received: from [127.0.0.1] (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id E34073A680E; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 22:08:24 -0800 (PST) X-Original-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Delivered-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 140223A680E for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 22:08:23 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -2.131 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.131 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[AWL=0.468, BAYES_00=-2.599] Received: from mail.ietf.org ([64.170.98.32]) by localhost (core3.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id Ec2TU-O18yK6 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 22:08:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail-out2.uio.no (mail-out2.uio.no [129.240.10.58]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 296EC3A6806 for ; Fri, 19 Dec 2008 22:08:22 -0800 (PST) Received: from mail-mx4.uio.no ([129.240.10.45]) by mail-out2.uio.no with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1LDv0X-0006Va-Am; Sat, 20 Dec 2008 07:08:13 +0100 Received: from bombur.uio.no ([129.240.6.233]) by mail-mx4.uio.no with esmtp (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1LDv0X-0000I6-3X; Sat, 20 Dec 2008 07:08:13 +0100 Received: from hbf by bombur.uio.no with local (Exim 4.44) id 1LDv0W-0006BA-UG; Sat, 20 Dec 2008 07:08:12 +0100 From: Hallvard B Furuseth MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: Date: Sat, 20 Dec 2008 07:08:12 +0100 To: Yves Dorfsman In-Reply-To: <494BC7CC.7030705@zioup.com> References: <494A6311.7030205@zioup.com> <494BC7CC.7030705@zioup.com> X-Mailer: VM 7.18 under Emacs 22.2.1 X-UiO-Spam-info: not spam, SpamAssassin (score=-5.0, required=5.0, autolearn=disabled, UIO_MAIL_IS_INTERNAL=-5, uiobl=NO, uiouri=NO) X-UiO-Scanned: 7EF6A7E230BBE5805D677FDFF7A3CBE6E1D6F12D X-UiO-SPAM-Test: remote_host: 129.240.6.233 spam_score: -49 maxlevel 200 minaction 2 bait 0 mail/h: 1 total 1322 max/h 8 blacklist 0 greylist 0 ratelimit 0 Cc: ldapext@ietf.org Subject: Re: [ldapext] new version of LDIF X-BeenThere: ldapext@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.9 Precedence: list List-Id: LDAP Extension Working Group List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Errors-To: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Yves Dorfsman wrote: >Hallvard B Furuseth wrote: >> If a file or entry has 'charset: ...' this should not only affect Typo, it _should_ only affect... >> 'attr: val', not 'attr:: val' and 'attr:< file'. UTF-8 has been "just about to take over the world" for a decade now. Maybe it's finally happening, but I'm not holding my breath. So as far as I'm concerned it'd be nice to have, but low priority. > What would the other charsets offer that utf-8 cannot, I mean beyond not > having to convert ? Well, support for other applications than LDAPv3, since LDAPv3 will require the LDIF parser to charset-convert to UTF-8. But if such a thing would need non-UTF-8 support it would likely have it now anyway. -- Hallvard _______________________________________________ Ldapext mailing list Ldapext@ietf.org https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ldapext From liccl@alsharq-pl.com.sa Sat Dec 20 04:03:17 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: ietfarch-ldapext-archive@core3.amsl.com Delivered-To: ietfarch-ldapext-archive@core3.amsl.com Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id C1B7D3A681F for ; Sat, 20 Dec 2008 04:03:17 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -29.917 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-29.917 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[BAYES_99=3.5, HELO_EQ_DK=1.009, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001, MIME_HTML_ONLY=1.457, RCVD_IN_XBL=3.033, URIBL_AB_SURBL=10, URIBL_BLACK=20, URIBL_JP_SURBL=10, URIBL_OB_SURBL=10, URIBL_RHS_DOB=1.083, URIBL_WS_SURBL=10, USER_IN_WHITELIST=-100] Received: from mail.ietf.org ([64.170.98.32]) by localhost (core3.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id vnFieWnwCe8E for ; Sat, 20 Dec 2008 04:03:16 -0800 (PST) Received: from 3403ds3-by.0.fullrate.dk (3403ds3-by.0.fullrate.dk [90.184.235.246]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with SMTP id 8B0FA3A68B7 for ; Sat, 20 Dec 2008 04:03:10 -0800 (PST) To: Subject: Discount price store: ID 43998 From: MIME-Version: 1.0 Importance: High Content-Type: text/html Message-Id: <20081220120315.8B0FA3A68B7@core3.amsl.com> Date: Sat, 20 Dec 2008 04:03:10 -0800 (PST) Dear Customer!

An optional feature ("charset:") > could likely go in if it doesn't conflict with an existing extension. I think another point is also how far you want to go. So far an LDIF file is basically just a dump, a copycat image of a directory, something you can use basically only as loading from zero. But it's usefulness decreases greatly if you want to use4 it on "dirty" directories, as LDIF currently has no understanding of existing objects, conditional modifications and so on. I am sure many people have developed their own formats and tools to do conditional updates, and so we have in our own project. Now would it be interesting for others to go as far as adding clues to the format about how the server should behave? What to do if the entry or the attribute mentioned in the LDIF file already exist, whether it should be replaced, changed, added on top, etc ... ? Yes, I do believe the world is moving to Unicode, and that pretty much everybody is using UTF-8 for it. Any new install of MS Windows and all the Linux distro I know of are installed by default in Unicode/UTF-8. Web browsers and mail clients support it, web pages are getting written in UTF-8 (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/05/moving-to-unicode-51.html) If anything, rather than a charset attribute, I'd rather see an encoding one for people who do use UTF-16 etc... Others may Yes, there probably are some implementations out there that would choke on 8 bit data. So I should have worded my sentence as "it will not disturb most existing products". This change is small but it means that LDIF files will not be compatible with the current RFC, so the version number should be changed. simo wrote: > > I think another point is also how far you want to go. > So far an LDIF file is basically just a dump, a copycat image of a > directory, something you can use basically only as loading from zero. > But it's usefulness decreases greatly if you want to use4 it on "dirty" > directories, as LDIF currently has no understanding of existing objects, > conditional modifications and so on. To be honest, the one problem I personally run into with LDIF on a daily basis is that anything that's not in english gets encoded in base64. I can see value in the other problems everybody is bringing up, but I have no first hand experience with them, and I feel they require longish discussions to arrive to a consensus, and then, because of the level of complexity of some of those, it would probably require to test them on a few implementations before we freeze it in an RFC. On the other hand, everybody seems to agree that UTF-8 support should be integrated properly, this require very little change to the current RFC, it will be easy to implement, and, I think, will make the lives of a lot of people quite a bit easier. It looks like the perfect low hanging fruit that should be dealt with as soon as possible. I am quite surprised it has not happened yet. Why don't we split this in two, we deal with UTF-8 now, and start working on the other issue in a separate thread ? -- Yves. http://www.sollers.ca/blog _______________________________________________ Ldapext mailing list Ldapext@ietf.org https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ldapext From ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Sun Dec 21 15:02:59 2008 Return-Path: X-Original-To: ldapext-archive@optimus.ietf.org Delivered-To: ietfarch-ldapext-archive@core3.amsl.com Received: from [127.0.0.1] (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 947AB3A696A; Sun, 21 Dec 2008 15:02:59 -0800 (PST) X-Original-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Delivered-To: ldapext@core3.amsl.com Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 002563A696A for ; Sun, 21 Dec 2008 15:02:58 -0800 (PST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at amsl.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: -2.499 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Status: No, score=-2.499 tagged_above=-999 required=5 tests=[AWL=0.100, BAYES_00=-2.599] Received: from mail.ietf.org ([64.170.98.32]) by localhost (core3.amsl.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id Ft+yutMib9pb for ; Sun, 21 Dec 2008 15:02:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from eb2bcom.com (eb2bcom.com [72.232.34.13]) by core3.amsl.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 025303A694E for ; Sun, 21 Dec 2008 15:02:58 -0800 (PST) Received: from eth3065.vic.adsl.internode.on.net ([150.101.156.248] helo=[192.168.1.180]) by host.eb2bcom.com with esmtpa (Exim 4.69) (envelope-from ) id 1LEXJx-0004lW-Cb; Mon, 22 Dec 2008 10:02:50 +1100 Message-ID: <494ECB13.3010801@eb2bcom.com> Date: Mon, 22 Dec 2008 10:02:43 +1100 From: Steven Legg User-Agent: Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 (Windows/20081105) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ldapext@ietf.org References: <494A6311.7030205@zioup.com> <568DD3EC-636C-4595-960B-0F07D237D9DB@Isode.com> In-Reply-To: <568DD3EC-636C-4595-960B-0F07D237D9DB@Isode.com> X-AntiAbuse: This header was added to track abuse, please include it with any abuse report X-AntiAbuse: Primary Hostname - host.eb2bcom.com X-AntiAbuse: Original Domain - ietf.org X-AntiAbuse: Originator/Caller UID/GID - [47 12] / [47 12] X-AntiAbuse: Sender Address Domain - eb2bcom.com X-Source: X-Source-Args: X-Source-Dir: Cc: Kurt Zeilenga Subject: Re: [ldapext] new version of LDIF X-BeenThere: ldapext@ietf.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.9 Precedence: list List-Id: LDAP Extension Working Group List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; Format="flowed" Sender: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Errors-To: ldapext-bounces@ietf.org Kurt Zeilenga wrote: > As side from not requiring escaping of UTF-8, I'd like to see LDIF be > revised to not only provide a representation of LDAP Add and Modify > requests, but all LDAP requests and all LDAP responses. The Internet-Draft has expired, but a copy of the latest revision is available here: http://www.xmled.info/drafts/draft-sciberras-xed-eldif-05.txt The main features of the proposal are that it uses UTF-8 and has a human-readable way of presenting attribute values with line endings, which XML has in abundance. Yes, I also think that the version number has to be bumped up for UTF-8 in LDIF since it means that you cannot transfer LDIF with UTF-8 over pure-ASCII transportation channels anymore. I'd just increment it per revision.
