This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.
You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.
In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, manet-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

Note Well
All statements related to the activities of the IETF and addressed to
the IETF are subject to all provisions of Section 10 of RFC 2026,

* any IETF mailing list, including the IETF list itself, any
working
group or design team list, or any other list functioning
under IETF
auspices,
* the RFC Editor or the Internet-Drafts function

Hi Everybody,
I think it will be better to post questions regarding ns2 or any other
simulator on their respective mailing lists. These mailing lists are really
very active and you will get an immediate reply to all your queries. This
issue has already been raised by Joe Macker and others in previous messages.
I would like to know what are the comments of other members of this mailing
list.
This is not to offend anybody. Just my opinion.
Best Regards,
Ankur

I begane my search about « QoS in mobile Ad-hoc networks ». I would very
pleased if any body answer me some of the questions below:
-What are parameters of QoS in Ad-hoc networks?
-What are the routing algorithms used in mobile Ad-hoc networks?
-What is the software used for simulating Ad-hoc networks?
-Are there any works (articles) wiche analyse the QoS in Ad-hoc
networks?
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you,
Leila

I begane my search about « QoS in mobile Ad-hoc networks ». I would very
pleased if any body answer me some of the questions below:
-What are parameters of QoS in Ad-hoc networks?
-What are the routing algorithms used in mobile Ad-hoc networks?
-What is the software used for simulating Ad-hoc networks?
-Are there any works (articles) wiche analyse the QoS in Ad-hoc
networks?
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you,
Leila

Folks,
This is a heads up for those not present in Atlanta and a request for
comment.
The WG met and principally discussed developments underway as a consequence
of rechartering activities. A decision has been made by the ADs and WG
chairs to convert MANET from the psuedo-research mode of its origin into a
pure engineering group, with more mature technical work proceeding through
group consensus and scoped problem statements. The proposed approach for
rechartering and updated milestones was presented at the meeting and there
was a clear consensus of agreement that this is a good way forward. In
parallel with MANET rechartering, an IRTF MANET RG was created as a subgroup
of the IRTF Routing RG. The research theme of this RG is "scalability". A
set of the existing IETF MANET proposals (FSR, LANMAR, TORA, ZRP)--all
originally targeted at scalability--have been selected for relocation to
this RG. The remaining IETF MANET I-Ds (AODV, DSR, OLSR,TBRPF) are roughly
completed and are to be submitted for Experimental RFC status to encourage
additional third party experimentation with concepts and implementations.
Lessons learned from the past years' development of these core protocols
will form the basis for the design of the new consensus-based protocol work.
The meeting concluded with four presentations giving the current status of
each of the core MANET I-Ds.
I am requesting any additional input from the list (agreement/disagreement?)
regarding this WG direction.
-Scott

Scott,
While I am not one to put strict boundaries on what constitutes "research" as opposed to "engineering," I agree with the new direction, to help move this thing forward. There are many out there who think that "a MANET standard" exists, and make decisions based on that misconception. Probably high time some sort of standards really did become available.

Hello Ayman,
In AODV, nodes find out about each others' sequence numbers only
as needed, typically by receiving RREQ or RREP messages.
A node could join an ad hoc network and not be known at all.
If it tries to communicate with another node in the network, it
would need to run some routing protocol to find a communications
path to that node. There is no one single answer to your question.
Regards,
Charlie P.

To all,
I would like to offer some suggestions for the new problem statement.
Joe presented a preliminary problem statement that said the protocol
should support up to 100 nodes, but I know this is up for discussion.
At the meeting in Atlanta, at least one person suggested
that we not limit ourselves to only 100 nodes since some or all
of the proposed protocols can already support more than that,
and I agree with this.
I know that AODV, TBRPF, and OLSR can all support at least 250 nodes
and probably more, using 802.11 with rate 2 Mbps.
I think the protocol should be as scalable and efficient as
possible without being "too complex", and without using
hierarchical routing.
It is generally agreed that the protocol should be extendable
to a scalable protocol (e.g., using a hierarchical method such
as landmark routing).
HOWEVER, IF THE PROTOCOL CAN SUPPORT MORE NODES WITHOUT USING
HIERARCHICAL ROUTING, THEN ITS HIERARCHICAL EXTENSION WILL
SUPPORT MORE NODES. (The same is true for other scalability
techniques such as HSLS and FSR.)
Perhaps the problem statement can give 100 or 250 nodes as a
*minimum requirement*, and state that when alternative techniques are
available that are reasonably simple and well understood, preference
should be given to techniques that perform better, e.g. that:
1. Support more nodes
2. Support a higher level of mobility and dynamics
3. Have better delivery ratio and end-to-end delay
4. Provide shorter paths
5. Generate less overhead (or "total overhead")
6. Support lower bandwidth links
We also need to be careful about stating the minimum requirements for
mobility. For example, the number of topology changes per second for
nodes traveling 20 mps according to the random waypoint model is much
greater in an urban environment than it is in an open field.

Hello,
Does the network layer report information such as link capacity ( i.e bandwidth ) and/or expected remaining battery life . We are currently developing a protocol which uses this information to calculate optimum paths .A way out of the bandwidth calculation would be indirectly measuring the performance of the link by sending packets across. Is there a more efficient way? Can it be assumed tht such information is available , while designing the protocol like the conventional protocols.
