A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Reliable Multicast Transport Working Group of the IETF.
Title : PGMCC single rate multicast congestion control:
Protocol Specification
Author(s) : L. Rizzo, G. Iannaccone, L. Vicisano, M. Handley
Filename : draft-ietf-rmt-bb-pgmcc-02.txt,.ps
Pages : 22
Date : 2003-7-1
This document describes PGMCC, a single rate multicast
congestion control scheme which is TCP-friendly and achieves
scalability, stability and fast response to variations in
network conditions. PGMCC is suitable for both non-reliable
and reliable data transfers. It is mainly designed for NAK-
based multicast protocols, and uses a window-based, TCP-like
control loop using positive ACKs between one representative of
the receiver group (the ACKER) and the sender. The ACKER is
selected dynamically and may change over time.
PGMCC is made of two components: a window-based control loop,
which closely mimics TCP behaviour, and a fast and low-
overhead procedure to select (and track changes of) the ACKER.
The scheme is robust to measurement errors, and supports fast
response to changes in the receiver set and/or network
conditions.

type "cd internet-drafts" and then

In the body type:
"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-rmt-bb-pgmcc-02.txt".
NOTE: The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
how to manipulate these messages.
Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Title : TCP-Friendly Multicast Congestion Control
(TFMCC):Protocol Specification
Author(s) : J. Widmer, M. Handley
Filename : draft-ietf-rmt-bb-tfmcc-02.txt,.ps
Pages : 30
Date : 2003-7-23
This document specifies TCP-Friendly Multicast Congestion
Control (TFMCC). TFMCC is a congestion control mechanism for
multicast transmissions in a best-effort Internet environment.
It is a single-rate congestion control scheme, where the
sending rate is adapted to the receiver experiencing the worst
network conditions. TFMCC is reasonably fair when competing
for bandwidth with TCP flows and has a relatively low
variation of throughput over time, making it suitable for
applications such as streaming media where a relatively smooth
sending rate is of importance.

Hi,

Algorithm in section 2.2 seems ambiguous.
For "ACK RECEPTION, LOSS DETECTED", order is important: if I suppose =
there are only one T variable and one W variable:
=20
* If I compute first T =3D T - W/2, I use the previous value of W
* If I compute T after W, I use the new value of W
=20
The same problem exist also in the token computation without losses.
=20
Is there something missing in the draft, or do I misunderstand?

gerard,
the order is certainly important and the draft reads:=20
T =3D T - W/2, W =3D W/2=20
where the comma indicates the order. so a sender decreases
the tokens by half-window and then cuts by half the current
window size.=20
however, if it makes the draft more readable we could use=20
two lines:
T =3D T - W/2;
W =3D W/2;=20

Reliable Multicast Transport
57th IETF, Vienna
Monday, July 14th
15:30 - 16:15
=====================
Opening Remarks
Chairs
======================
- Charter was updated:
* removed TRACK as per WG consensus
* GRA is still in, but to be discussed (see next)
- GRA discussion: no interested party answered to the call for
editors/requirements issued after the last IETF. The proposal is to
discontinue the GRA work at this time. To be decided on the mailing
list.
NACK Oriented Reliable Multicast (NORM) Update
Joe Macker for Brian Adamson
draft-ietf-rmt-pi-norm-07
draft-ietf-rmt-bb-norm-06
==============================================
NORM BB updated 06 to 07
- http://norm.pf.itd.nrl.navy.mil has open source
- changes to make doc more compliant with TFMRC
PI doc updated from 05 to 06
- modularized
- Vincent Roca has provided feedback. In particular a header extension
options is currently being considered to coordinate with the FLUTE spec.
- added congestion control fields
- Next steps, open source will continue to mature
further experimentations and simulations will be performed
- Need to decide whether we want a new WG last call for the NORM
drafts, or just go to the IESG.
- Need to solve the header extension and FLUTE issue.
FLUTE, File Delivery over Undirectional Transport
Tony Paila
draft-ietf-rmt-flute-00
==========
- 00 WG draft, derived from FDALC individual submission
- FDALC specify a particular application (usage profile) of ALC for
file delivery over unidirectional links
- Toni is editor, added 3 new authors
- believes that new draft meets requirements from last meeting
- Proceed providing updates:
* FDT content, XML schema from FDT syntax,
* FDT encap streamlined, cross checked with ALC/LCT RFCs
* how to use multiple channels, etc
* how to describe file delivery session using SDP is now info chapter
* receiver operation is now informational chapter
* security considerations elaborated further
- discussion on whether part of the SDP section should be normative
instead. Lorenzo to provide comments on this.
- propose to hold last call in September and maybe add this a charter
milestone.
- two genetically independent implementations to be ready by
November with some interop testing, at least one will be open source
PGMCC Update
Gianluca Iannaccone
draft-ietf-rmt-bb-pgmcc-02
====================
Security considerations
One issue addressed: Session hijacking
- session hijacking solved out authentications
- can drive the sender to flood the network
- breaks the election mechanism
The rest is transport protocol responsibility
- authentication
- deal with the denial of service problem
Recommendations
- PGMCC sender should compare ACK stream with reported
loss rate and RTT info reports to prevent DOS attacks
- if violation mark acker has ineligible
- believer ready for last call
Lorenzo: TFMCC and PGMCC both look like they are ready
for last call...need to check with TFMCC authors
Lorenzo: discussed with Allison about potential outside
reviews of TF/PGM CC drafts form people not involved
with them...would be an additional step before submission
to the IESG
Pullman: have done some experiments with TFMCC and it
appears to work well.

Hi,
At the San Francisco IETF meeting, the removal of GRA from the
proposed milestone list prompted some RMT participants to express
interest in continuing the work (please see the minutes).
However since then we haven't seen any concrete sign of interest,
hence we are proposing again to remove GRA from the RMT milestones.
If you object to this, are able to commit your time to contribute
to GRA and see realistic applications for it, please reply to this
email within the next few days.
thank you,
the chairs.
