Reviewer: James Gannon Review Result: Ready with Issues Document: draft-davids-forsalereg-09 Review Type: DNS Directorate Technical Review Review Date: 17 June 25 Summary: This document defines an operational convention for indicating that a domain name is available for sale by publishing a reserved leaf node using the underscored label "_for-sale". The convention is simple, uses established DNS practices for underscored labels, and is should have minimal/no impact on normal domain operations. Technical Review: From a DNS technical perspective, the use of a reserved underscored label for meta-information is consistent with existing conventions. Placing this label as a leaf node ensures it does not interfere with delegations or services. I have no technical objections to the mechanism as specified; it is clear and should not pose operational issues. I have a concern about the potential proliferation of use of this mechansim however vs using existing options such as TXT records. Process Concern: However, the proposed convention is generic and has clear potential to become widely adopted across registrars and domain owners. This means it may become a de facto standard. Given this, I believe this work would benefit from broader community discussion and review within the DNSOP, rather than progressing solely via the Independent Stream. Doing so would ensure consensus and consistency with other reserved-label practices. Recommendation: Technical: No issues. Process: Recommend that this work be brought to DNSOP for community discussion and potential standardization. James Gannon DNS Directorate Reviewer
