Welcome to the Internet School Networking working group (ISN-WG)
mailing list. This mailing list was created to foster and facilitate
communications among those interested in furthering the mission and
goals of the ISN.

The Internet School Networking Working Group is chartered to address
issues related to the connection of primary and secondary schools
worldwide to the Internet. The key audiences include network service
providers and educational policy makers responsible for network access
and use. The key areas of focus for this group are advocacy and
articulation.

1. Advocacy. The ISN Working Group will facilitate dialog between the
primary and secondary education community and the Internet engineering
community in order to identify and fulfill the needs of the primary and
secondary school community.

2. Articulation. Informed by the group's experience, and with input
from other IETF working groups, the ISN Working Group will articulate
solutions to the challenges a school may experience in seeking and
gaining a connection to the Internet, as well as the benefits of such a
connection. Advantages to Internet connectivity may be articulated by
means of pointers to such services as user interfaces, directories,
organizations, and training programs, as well as to other resources.
Articulation will most often be in the form of periodic documents that
address key issues of interest to the school networking community.
Representative issues to be addressed by the group include connectivity
models, educational directories, and acceptable use policies.

The ISN working group met in Chicago to discuss the future of the group.
It was noted that the working group was originally formed about 6 years
ago and since that time, schools' participation and involvement in the
Internet have evolved rather significantly. Current issues facing schools
tend more towards "How do you integrate this technology into the
curriculum?" rather than "How do you get connected?" With this shift in
focus, the group was asked to if there are any well-defined problems that
could be solved within the IETF. April Marine, the User Services AD
reminded the group that IETF working groups are convened to resolve
clearly defined problems and issues and once the group accomplishes that,
the group is closed down. If new issues/problems arise, the group can
be re-convened with a new charter, goals and milestones.

The group was polled to see if there were any problems or issues that
met the criteria and there weren't any that the group thought would be
appropriate. Thus the ISN working group will be closed but the isn-wg
list will be maintained to continue discussions. If other problems
and issues should come up, the group can be re-established with a new
charter.

I would like to thank Jodi and the various other ISN chairs over the years
for their great work in leading a group with a very broad charter! ISN
has made some great contributions of which you all can be proud.

As we move to close the group for the time being, I just want to remind
everyone that this list will remain open for discussion. If people have a
strong desire to work on specific projects in the IETF forum in the
future, please send email about them! We will have to go through the
normal IETF working group startup fun, but there is no reason a strong
movement toward a specific goal will not be supported.

Again, many thanks to you all!

regards,
April

Sorry you're getting a duplicate on this April, but this mailer acts a
bit squirrely with list replies.

With the group's original purpose now at an end, there is still much work
to be done. Some of the ideas that have been floated across this list in
the last couple of months are extremely important and have a real need to
be, at the very minimum, discussed. The interest that was shown recently
even highlights this and along with the topics that were brought up are a
strong start towards a future direction.

School, in many areas, is back in session and what better place is there
to examine the many tasks yet to be addressed. This is a good place to
start laying down ideas, then April and/or Jodi can (hopefully) help with
what to do next.

Vince.
