Hi Randy,

> Ted Stockwell, one of our agentx list subscribers reminds us...

Yes, I've been meaning to do this for some time and will do so
first thing in the morning. Thanks, Ted.

Also, for everyone, please start thinking about the specifics
of AgentX charter modification...now that we've advanced to
Proposed Standard status, it's time to lay down some goals
and delivery dates for the MIB, implementation reports, and
interoperability tests...it would be helpful to receive some
proposed agenda items and dates "from the floor", so to speak.

Thanks.

Great! In fact, I just referred someone to it about 20 minutes ago!

Ok...I will try to give you some input off-line over the next
several days...one thing is that we should replace the current
"issues list" with a new list oriented toward implementation
issues and maybe one for tentative changes to make to the RFC
when it goes from Proposed to Draft status...a section for
implementors to safely post and update their implementation
reprots would be nifty too.

I think Bob Natale had prepared the updates needed to the IETF charter;
those mods should probably be propagated to the scguild pages as well.

This memo defines a standardized framework for extensible SNMP
agents. It defines processing entities called master agents
and subagents, a protocol (AgentX) used to communicate between
them, and the elements of procedure by which the extensible agent
processes SNMP protocol messages.

This document is a product of the SNMP Agent Extensibility Working
Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard Protocol.

This document specifies an Internet standards track protocol for
the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the
"Internet Official Protocol Standards" (STD 1) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution
of this memo is unlimited.

This announcement is sent to the IETF list and the RFC-DIST list.
Requests to be added to or deleted from the IETF distribution list
should be sent to IETF-REQUEST@IETF.ORG. Requests to be
added to or deleted from the RFC-DIST distribution list should
be sent to RFC-DIST-REQUEST@ISI.EDU.

Details on obtaining RFCs via FTP or EMAIL may be obtained by sending
an EMAIL message to rfc-info@ISI.EDU with the message body
help: ways_to_get_rfcs. For example:

        To: rfc-info@ISI.EDU
        Subject: getting rfcs

        help: ways_to_get_rfcs

Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the
author of the RFC in question, or to admin@DS.INTERNIC.NET. Unless
specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for
unlimited distribution.

Submissions for Requests for Comments should be sent to
RFC-EDITOR@ISI.EDU. Please consult RFC 1543, Instructions to RFC
Authors, for further information.

Hi Randy, everyone:

Well, first of all, let me say that the IETF AgentX web page has been
updated with new admin info (as previously discussed on the list):

	http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/agentx-charter.html

and you might want to review the charter and schedule info there--
all now somewhat history--as a basis for responding to the rest of
this note.

We need to update our charter and schedule...it should now focus on:

	- Implementation reports (including e-mail dialogue)
	- Interoperability tests (eg., the bake-offs mentioned by Randy)
	- Any necessary changes to RFC2257 as a result of the above
that we might want to apply when applying for Draft Standard
status in about six months or so
	- Completing the AgentX MIB document
	- WG sessions at forthcoming IETF meetings, if needed/desired
	- Consideration of an AgentX API specification
	- Anything else that might be helpful/necessary?

If you have any input to offer on this, please post it soon (or
send it directly to me if you don't want to post it)...I would
like to be able to post new charter/schedule text by the end of
this month for final WG review and then hand-off to our AD for
his consideration.

It would be helpful, Dale, if you could possibly collate or just
summarize the current open implementation issues that were raised
since completion of the final I-D (while we were waiting for IESG
action).

Wrt Randy's specific question, we (ACE*COMM) will soon start
posting implementation reports wrt our Win32 implementation
of AgentX and will be ready to participate in interoperability
tests at the end of February.

Carnegie Mellon is also working on an implementation of RFC 2257. The
implementation that we are working on will originally be targeted at Unix
platforms but we hope to eventually get it running under Windows NT as well.

If anyone feels that we should have one or more AgentX WG
sessions this time around, please post your rationale, agenda
items, and preferences (eg., number of sessions, days, timeslots,
etc.). Personally, I am inclined to wait for the 42nd IETF
meeting, to be held in Chicago in August...I will outline why
below, but that is simply based on my own estimates of progress...
according to which the 41st IETF is just a smidgeon too early.

The activities we are working on now include:

	- Charter/schedule update
	- Implementations of RFC 2257 (with problem/progress
	  reports posted to the list)
	- Completion of AgentX MIB
	- Planning for interoperability testing
	- Consideration of AgentX API requirements

My estimate is that multiple viable/testable implementations of
RFC 2257 sould be available in the March/April time frame--I guess
this could make it either opportune or "just not quite right" for
the WG to meet in LA. Given the recent (ie., several past IETF
meetings) discussions about stretching everyone too thinly, I am
personally inclined to err on the "just not quite right" side...
but if there is any significant level of support for the other
view then, by all means, we should definitely capitalize on that
momentum...and for some reason I really can't finger, I'm feeling
awfully conservative about this today...so some couter-input might
be just what the doctor ordered!

There has been next to no feedback on the list wrt proposed
charter/schedule revision items. So, I will go ahead and post
a "straw man" revision in a couple of days for WG review,
before submitting it to our AD for his consideration and IESG
approval.

Cordially,

BobN

Waiting until August would work out better for us.

That might also afford the opportunity to hold a bakeoff
and incorporate that feedback into the WG meeting.

Makes sense to me.

Thanks,
