In message <Pine.LNX.3.91.951130112919.11078A-100000@andrew.triumf.ca> you writ
e:
>If I (or sd) start vic with an odd port number, eg.
>vic 224.2.238.250/45559
>it loses bit0 and starts up as 224.2.238.250/45558,

This is intentional; RTPv2 states that data goes on the even port and
session information goes on the odd port.

>and doesn't see the transmission.

If you are trying to watch an RTPv1 conference (transmitted using nv
or ivs) you need to use the "-A nv" or "-A ivs". The .sd.tcl that comes
with vic starts up vic with the correct arguments for the session you
are launching.

Thanks, Bill and others.

Finger trouble as usual. I hadn't set the format in sd, was sending nv,
and my .sd.tcl defaulted to vic if the format wasn't set.

		BERKELEY MULTIMEDIA AND GRAPHICS SEMINAR
           (Wed December 6, 1995 12:30-2:00 PDT 405 Soda Hall)

The San Francisco Public Library's Special Collections
			Networked Multimedia Database

		        	Larry Hiner
 			    Triadigm Technology

Two years ago, the San Francisco Public Library identified a need to
preserve and present valuable and irreplaceable items from its San
Francisco History and other popular special collections. Digital Equipment
Corporation, with its partner Triadigm Technology, developed a prototype
application which demonstrated the potential of new media technologies to
digitize, store, manage, and present photos, graphics, film, video, music,
narration, and text from the SF Histroy, Gay & Lesbian, and Dorothy Starr
special collections - and deliver presentation based on this material to
multimedia workstation across a Local Area Network.

This presentation will illuminate:

1. the development of the prototype application;
2. the year-long analysis of the prototype under conditions of actual patron
   use;
3. the design of the application, from the underlying database structure
   through the coding used to develop the high-level Future Arts software;
   and
4. current efforts to expand the scope and functionality of the applications
   at the SFPL.

See www-plateau.cs.berkeley.edu/298 for further information.

The seminar will be broadcast on the Internet MBONE starting at 12:40.
The Fujitsu Seminar room (405 Soda) has approximately 30 seats. Folks at
Berkeley might want to attend the seminar by watching it on your workstation,
if you can receive MBONE transmissions.

Is anyone interested in receiving the GSM (low-bandwidth) sessions from this
IETF, or will the PCM sessions suffice?

We will transmit the GSM sessions if there are any requests.

Please note that the wb sessions will be newly created and deleted every day,
to make sure all the normal 'wb junk' doesn't accumulate.

Hi!

I have a few questions about currently used protocol versions and
Hardware/Software configurations:

1.) I have read draft-ietf-avt-rtp-08.ps which describes RTPv2, however
if I take a look at what VAT 3.4 or NV 3.3beta sends it seems to
be some RTPv0 or RTPv1 respectively.
Question: What versions of RTP do the usual Mbone tools (sd, vic, vat, nv,
ivs, wb) use and where can I find the specifications of these versions?

2.) I am using a sun sparcstation 5 with SunOS 4.1.4 and a Paralax
video capture board. When I start up vic (from vicbin-2.7a26-sunos4.1.4.tar)
and try to start sending, it sais it can't capture the videoboard.
This is although the paralax board has been recognized by vic correctly.
Question: What am I doing wrong? I have heard from someone else that he
had the same problem. http://www-nrg.ee.lbl.gov/vic/ doesn't say anything
about this.

3.) I think of buying a cheaper videocapture board for another
sparcstation5 (with SunOS4.1.3_U1) we have. I have found the following
in ftp.isi.edu:/mbone/faq.txt (22-Dec-94):
For example, the VideoPix card has been used on the
SPARC, but is no longer for sale. The newer SunVideo card is
supported under Solaris 2.x, but there is no device driver for
SunOS 4.1.x (at least not yet).
Question: Is this still true? Where can I find a discussion of available
products (including discussion on Mbone-tool compatibility). Does a
newer faq.txt exist?

regards

	Jan-Peter Richter

Subject: VGW 1.0 ALPHA
Date: Fri, 08 Dec 1995 15:55:22 -0800

This is an announcement of the availability of an alpha release
of an application level "Video Gateway", vgw, version 1.0 alpha v11, that
allows rate controlling between two RTP sessions through format conversion
(transcoding) and frame dropping.

(See Amir, McCanne, and Zhang "An Application Level Video Gateway". In
proceedings of ACM Multimedia '95. November, 1995 or
 http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~elan/articles/pub/vgw.ps)

Vgw conforms to the final (RTP-7) Internet Draft for the IETF AVT Real Time
Transport protocol. It also conforms to the July '95 Internet
Draft for the H.261 payload specification. As a result, you'll need to
use an RTP compliant application (e.g. vic version 2.7 alpha) to view the
H.261 output of the gateway.

Source and binaries are available from:

	ftp://daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu/pub/vgw/alpha-test

This alpha-test is intended for sites who are interested in
fielding the new release and are willing to debug and report
problems. This is *not* a stable, general public release. Once
the alpha testers have tripped over the major bugs, we intend to
do a general release. This will include updated vgw binaries
for most supported systems.

If you are interested in receiving updates about vgw related information,
in particular updates on availability of new versions of vgw, please send
mail to vgw-request@daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu requesting this.

Attached is the distribution README including platform support and general
information.

Please direct vgw-related correspondence to vgw@daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu
(which includes only the developers and is not distributed beyond our site),
and thanks for any help with the alpha-test.

Thank you!

Notes for Version 1.0-alpha of the Video Gateway
	       ------------------------------------------------

VGW 1.0 ALPHA
vgw@daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu
University of California at Berkeley
Daedalus Group
ftp://daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu/pub/vgw/

INTRODUCTION
------------

This is version 1.0-alpha of the Video Gateway. It is an experimental
application level tool which enables rate controlling between two RTP video
sessions through format conversion (transcoding) and frame dropping.

The Video Gateway contains two components:

1. The engine: vgw
2. The user interface: vgw_ui

These two programs run as separate processes and communicate over a shared
communication channel. This model allows other applications to control the
gateway enabling coordination between tools in the conferencing environment.

*IMPORTANT*: ALPHA RELEASE NOTES
--------------------------------

The current version of the gateway is still in the alpha stage. As such, you
will probably encounter problems. We would greatly appreciate it if upon
encountering a problem, you could please relay as much information and
context as possible about the problem to vgw@daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu.

If you wish to be on the vgw mailing list which primarily will be used to
update on availability of new versions, please send mail indicating this to
vgw-request@daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu.

Thank you!

REQUIREMENTS
------------

The following libraries and capabilities are required for a build of the
video gateway:

1. Tcl7.4/Tk4.0
	Available from ftp://ftp.smli.com/pub/tcl
	See http://www.smli.com/research/tcl for complete information.
2. Tcl/Tk BLT extensions version 1.8
	Available from ftp://ftp.cs.uoregon.edu/pub/jhobbs
Note that this is not an official BLT version, but rather patches
applied by Jeffrey Hobbs (jhobbs@cs.uoregon.edu) and others to the
	official 1.7 version.
3. IP Multicast support
	See http://www.best.com/~prince/techinfo/mbone.html.

PLATFORMS
----------

The video gateway has been built and tested on the following platforms:

1. Sun SPARC: Solaris 2.4, SunOS 4.x (with IP Multicast support)
2. Intel x86: BSD/OS 2.0
3. DEC/AXP: OSF/1 3.x
4. SGI Indy: IRIX 5.x

INSTALLATION
------------

In the current directory follow the following steps:

% ./configure

Due to ambiguities in the naming of the new and old versions libtcl and libtk,
if you have more than one installation of these libraries you should verify
that LIB_TCL and INCLUDE_TCL have been defined appropriately in ui/Makefile
and vgw/Makefile, and LIB_TK and SRC_TK_TCL have been appropriately defined in
ui/Makefile. If you only have one version of tcl/tk (7.4/4.0) on your system -
you can ignore the previous comment.

% make depend
% make

The standard installation directory is /usr/local/bin. If you wish to
change this directory, edit at this point the 'install' target of ./Makefile.

% make install

RUNNING THE GATEWAY
-------------------

The install will install two programs "vgw_ui" and "vgw". To run the gateway,
simply type:

% vgw_ui <sessionA> <sessionB>

where sessionA and sessionB are two conference sessions (multicast or unicast)
specified in the format: addr/port[/ttl].

Note: you must have the installation directory of the engine, vgw, in
your path since the user interface will attempt to execute it and will
fail otherwise. (You can also manually specify an engine using the -x flag, see
vgw_ui(1)).

TRANSCODERS
-----------

The following transcoders exist in the current version of the gateway:

1. jpeg to h261
2. nv to h261

Any other input format other than jpeg or nv will simply be forwarded
across the gateway (and will be denoted in the interface as a "pass-thru"
transcoder).

H.261 ENCODER NOTE
------------------

The H.261 format used in the gateway is not compatible with vic versions
prior to the current 2.7 which currently is in advanced alpha status. Thus, in
order to view the output of the gateway, you must install vic-2.7, available
>from ftp://ftp.ee.lbl.gov/vic/conferencing/alpha-test.

In either case, ya gotta admire Bob's tenacity at Internet-bashing.
No amount of Internet success seems to temper it.

From: Isidor Kouvelas <I.Kouvelas@cs.ucl.ac.uk>

In addition to the normal audiocast of the World Wide Web conference that
will be using VAT, we plan to make an experimental multicast using the RAT
audio conferencing tool developed at UCL.
The main benefit of RAT is its resilience to packet loss due to the
incorporation of a secondary low-bandwidth redundant encoding.

RAT is still experimental but alpha releases can be obtained using anonymous
ftp from:

cs.ucl.ac.uk in the directory mice/rat	(Europe)
ftp.lcs.mit.edu in the directory pub/mice (USA)

The initial RAT session will take place on Tuesday 12 Dec. We will attempt
to cover as many sessions as possible but may not cover all of them if this
interferes with the main multicast which will be using VAT.
The RAT session will probably NOT be advertised on SD (because of conflicts
with existing .sd.tcl configurations. The correct command line to start it
will be:

	rat -t 127 224.2.10.20/17010

We are extremely interested in feedback, particularly regarding difference
in quality between RAT and VAT. Please send all comments to:

During the WWW conference, we will experiment with integrating the
functionality of sd into a web browser.

For the moment, this service allows to tune into Mbone transmissions
directly from within a Web browser (following earlier work by
Bill Fenner).

Future work should address the integration of conference scheduling (currently
already handled by WWW sites), announcement (currently handled by sd)
and replay of Mbone conferences (currently handled in no coordinated way).

The service can be reached at the following URL (subject to change and
to bugs - please indicate !):

Please Note time change for this event as originally scheduled.
NEW TIME: 9:00-11:00am EDT.

The SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome and SUNY-NET are happy
to present SUNY/RUSSIA Distance Learning Program Retrospective. We expect
to keep the entire video transmission bandwidth under around 128Kbps
using nv (video) and vat (audio) with ttl 127. The session will be
advertised in sd as "SUNY DISTANCE LEARNING".

The conference will connect participants from the Moscow
Institute of Electronics and Mathematics with faculty from
SUNY Tech and administrators who participated in a distance
learning program which recently concluded. Under the program,
seven Russian students received M.S. degrees from SUNY Tech in
Computer Science. Mbone tools were used in thesis defences for
some of the students. The Chancellor of SUNY is expected to speak
speak at around 9:00am EDT.

More information is available at http://www.cs.sunyit.edu/miem.html

I hate to say this however he is not that far off. With Win95's TCP/IP support,
multimedia chipsets ready to be deployed on the first quarter of 96, ISDN
becoming more available , and full duplex cable modem lurking in the near
future. What do you think?

BTW: Some of the multimedia chipsets are really awesome,
check out Chromatic's mpact:
http://www.mpact.com

That baby can do upto 2 billion instructions, it can do h.261 or mpeg-1
encoding
and decoding and much more. How much is the chip going to cost?
Oh, about $150 per chip 8)

Today , I read on a newspaper about the so called "NC" which is supposed
to come with 28.8 kb modem and ATM support . The targeted cost for the
"NC" is about $500.

From: Chris Jepeway <jepeway@cs.utk.edu>

Hi:

I've been having trouble getting a reflector
to work w/ nv on a SunOS box & CU-SeeMe on a Mac.
I've also been having some trouble finding the proper
forum to pose my questions. Someone suggested that
this list might be able to help, so, follows, my first
plea for help that I sent to the Reflector List at
Indiana State.

Oh, if you do respond, please do so via e-mail to me <jepeway@cs.utk.edu>.

Apologies to those who've seen this message before.

Hi all:

I'm trying to set up a reflector so that unicast nv clients and
CU-SeeMe clients can all participate in a videoconference. I'm
testing with version 4.0-b3 of the reflector on a Sparc running
SunOS-4.1.3_U1, nv 3.3beta on a Sparc running 4.1.4, nv on a Sparc running
SunOS-4.1.3_U1, and CU-SeeMe 4.0-b3 running on a PowerMac-8100/80AV running
MacOS-7.5.1. When testing, the Mac can see video streams from nv,
but the nv's cannot see the Mac's video stream. I can, however, get
unicast nv clients to see each other's video. How do I get the Mac's
video to show up on the nv clients?

BTW, is source to the reflector available?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Trying to find some way for several people at X-terminals to launch
conferencing tools without sd, I have made a suite of hacks (er, tools)
that do what's required.

A hacked version of sd_listen fills a database with session data. The CGI
script http://andrew.triumf.ca/cgi-bin/rddb.cgi reads it and, if you have
the little script ftp://andrew.triumf.ca/pub/sdl , launches some tools
when you select VIEW.

Currently, there is nothing to kill expired sessions, and there is no
file locking so it will probably die if two processes try to access the
database at once. Also, it inherits all the bugs of sd_listen (except the
one about formats for more than one media).

I didn't use sd_launch because 1) I couldn't get it to compile (OK, I
didn't try terrribly hard), and 2) as I understand, it passes a token to
a running copy of sd, which would have the same problem as trying to run
multiple copies of regular sd.

What I'd like is some information about the time fields in sd, so I can
decode the lifetime data and kill old sessions. Passing them to Perl as a
regular variable didn't seem to work.

INTERNET DAY OF PROTEST: TUESDAY DECEMBER 12, 1995

Outrageous proposals to censor the Internet demand that the Internet
Community take swift and immediate action. We must stand up and let
Congress know that we will not tolerate their attempts to destroy this
medium! Please join hundreds of thousands of your fellow citizens in a
National Day of Protest on Tuesday December 12, 1995.

As you know, on Wednesday December 6, 1995, the House Conference
Committee on Telecommunications Reform voted to impose far reaching and
unconstitutional "indecency" restrictions on the Internet and other
interactive media, including large commercial online services (such as
America Online, Compuserve, and Prodigy) and smaller Internet Service
Providers such as Panix, the Well, Echo, and Mindvox.

These restrictions threaten the very existence of the Internet and
interactive media as a viable medium for free expression, education,
commerce. If enacted, the Internet as we know it will never be the
same.

Libraries will not be able to put any books online that might
offend a child somewhere. No "Catcher in the Rye" or "Ulysses" on the net.
Internet Service Providers could face criminal penalties for allowing
children to subscribe to their Internet Services, forcing many small
companies to simply refuse to sell their services to anyone under 18. Worst
of all, everything you say and publish on the net will have to be "dumbed
down" to that which is acceptable to a child.

As Internet users, we simply must not allow this assault against the
Internet and our most basic freedoms to go unchallenged.

On Tuesday December 12, the organizations below are urging you to
join us in a NATIONAL DAY OF PROTEST. The goal is to flood key members of
the House and Senate with phone calls, faxes and email with the message
that the Internet community WILL NOT TOLERATE Congressional attempts to
destroy the Internet, limit our freedoms and trample on our rights.

Below are the phone, fax, and email address of several key members of
Congress on this issue and instructions on what you can do to join the
National Day of Protest to save the Net.

______________________________________________________________________

WHAT YOU MUST DO ON TUESDAY DECEMBER 12, 1995

1. Throughout the day Tuesday December 12, please contact as many
members of Congress on the list below as you can. If you are only
able to make one call, contact House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Finally,
if the Senator or Representative from your state is on the list
below, be sure to contact him or her also.

2. Urge each Member of Congress to "stop the madness". Tell them that
they are about to pass legislation that will destroy the Internet as
an educational and commercial medium. If you are at a loss for
words, try the following sample communique:

   Sample phone call:

Both the House and Senate bills designed to protect children
from objectionable material on the Internet will actually
destroy the Internet as an medium for education, commerce, and
political discourse. There are other, less restrictive ways to
        address this issue.

I urge you to oppose both measures being proposed in the
conference committee. This is an important election issue to
        me.

   Sample letter (fax or email):

The Senate conferees are considering ways to protect children
from inappropriate material on the Internet. A vote for either
the House or Senate proposals will result in the destruction of
the Internet as a viable medium for free expression, education,
commerce. Libraries will not be able to put their entire book
collections online. Everyday people like me will risk massive
fines and prison sentences for public discussions someone s
        somewhere might consider "indecent".

There are other, less restrictive ways to protect children from
objectionable material online. This is an important election
        issue to me.

3. If you're in San Francisco, or near enough to get there, go to
the Rally Against Censorship from Ground Zero of the Digital Revolution:

   WHEN: Monday, December 11, 1995 12:00 - 1:00 PM
WHERE: South Park (between 2nd and 3rd, Bryant and Brannon) San Francisco.
   SPEAKERS: To be announced
BRING: Attention-grabbing posters, signs, and banners that demonstrate
your committment to free speech and expression, and your feelings
        about Congress.

4. Mail a note to protest@vtw.org to let us know you did your part.
Although you will not receive a reply due to the number of
anticipated responses, we'll be counting up the number of people that
participated in the day of protest.

Hello,

I am looking for a stable nv 3.3 beta binary built to support a
Parallax Xvideo board. We have a SunSparc5 running Solaris 2.3 and
the latest Parallax upgrade (dont have that number handy). It was all
ordered and installed in 1995. I have tried vic 2.7a29 but have had
numerous system reboots and window manager crashes. I am also looking at
the newer ivs but nv is the most standard because of sd and because
I like the X11 grabber in nv.

Can you point me to a parallax built nv3.3beta binary for solaris 2.3?
The one at ftparc.xerox doesn't have parallax support in it.

Parallax XVideo capture support provided by Peter Schnorf
     <schnorf@canon.com>, Henning Schulzrinne
     <hgs@research.att.com>, and Bill Fenner
     <fenner@cmf.nrl.navy.mil>.

Here's how I have the nv3.3beta makefile defined:

CC      = gcc
INCS    = -I/opt/SUNWits/Graphics-sw/xil/include \
          -I/opt/VideoPix/lib -I/opt/VideoPix/sys \
          -I/opt/packages/parallax/lib \
          -I/opt/packages/tcl/include -I/usr/openwin/include
NVLIBS  = -L/opt/SUNWits/Graphics-sw/xil/lib \
          -R/opt/SUNWits/Graphics-sw/xil/lib -lxil \
          -L/opt/VideoPix/lib -lvfc \
          -L/opt/packages/parallax/include \
          -L/opt/packages/tcl/lib -ltk -ltcl \

Sigh. I wrote this a long time ago, and never got around to releasing it.

No, sd_launch runs the tools just like sd would.

I will email you my web cgi script along with its session listening daemon and
will gladly help you get sd-launch properly compiled; it should fit your needs

Papers are solicited for a special issue of the International Journal of
Computer Systems Science & Engineering on Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)
Switching to be published in the third quarter of 1996.

During the past decade, a considerable amount of effort has been made in
studying and designing ATM switches which is believed to be the most
developed aspect of ATM. The field has now become a mature area and ATM
switches are becoming commercially available. This special issue will
include a set of original and survey articles from both industry and
academia that represents the current state-of-the-art in ATM switching.
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):

o Switch architectures o Fault tolerance
o Buffering schemes o Congestion control and traffic management
o Performance modeling o Practical experience & field trials
o Buffer management o Simulation techniques for large switches
   o Commercial switches

Five copies of complete manuscripts (not to exceed 25 double-spaced pages)
should be sent to Mohammed Atiquzzaman by 1 February 1996. Please include a
title page containing author(s) names and affiliations, postal addresses,
e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, and fax numbers. Electronic (PostScript
only) submissions are encouraged. Authors should follow the IJCSSE
manuscript submission format.

Hi everyone,
I am new to RTP specifications and have some enquiries about the
specification after reading the latest RTP specs. Could you please
enlighten me...
What is VAT? Is it some kind of protocols and if so what's the
major difference between VAT and RTP? Where can I obtain the VAT
specification?
Is there any RTP payload format for Audio such as mu-law or GSM?
Where can I obtain these formats?
	Thanks...

I've got the LBL vat running on Linux 1.1.92 with the voxware 3.0.1
driver and a SoundBlaster 16.

I recorded some audio from the WWW4 conference using vat_record and have
been playing it back.

Sometimes I hear a sort of "poppling" effect from Linux vat v3.5 - kind
of a cross between a pop and a ripple. Less frequently I get a DMA
timeout with an audio looping effect, which clears itself after a few
seconds.

Having the recording, it became clear it's something to do with vat/Linux
rather than dropouts on the Mbone.
Clicking on the usernames (to bring up the stats panel) while vat is
playing seems to make the poppling go away for a while. My system (486/66
w/16Mb) shows about 90% idle; other activity doesn't seem to affect it.

Short audio clips (800kb WAV) or AVI (eg. Disney Toystory promo) are fine.

Is this something I can fix in a config, a problem in vat, or must I buy
a Gravis Ultrasound ?

Sounds to me that is a linux sound driver problem and nothing to do
with vat .

THEME:

With the availability of broadband multi-service networks and with recent
advances in multimedia technology, the creation of collaborative environments
that offer location-independent shared visualization and interaction tools
is becoming increasingly feasible. By providing shared virtual spaces for
interaction and communication that go beyond desktop videoconferencing,
collaborative environments enable the creation of the virtual analog to
laboratories, meeting places, and classrooms.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers and developers
working in multimedia computing and collaborative environments. The workshop
is a forum for engineers and scientists to exchange ideas and research
results relating to the state-of-the and future directions of wide-area
collaborative environments.

Andrew, you didn't mention what kind of video card you have. There have
been reports of some conflicts with Creative Labs and Cirrus cards. If
that's the trouble, maybe you should change your video card instead.
:-) I have enclosed the FAQ below.

The FAQ mentions that the problem happens in DOS only (I assume meaning
Windows works fine) and then only with programs that use VESA. Are you
running vat with nv? Are you running X with vat? Try vat by itself and
see if you still have trouble.

Cirrus Logic Video cards and Creative Labs Sound Card Incompatibility FAQ
=========================================================================
				by Gareth blades (gareth@blades.tcp.co.uk)

The latest version is available from my homepage:-
http://www.tcp.co.uk/~blades/index.html

The latest version of this ASCII document can also be obtained via ftp from
rtfm.mit.edu as :-
/pub/usenet/news.answers/games/incompatibility/cirrus-soundblaster

This FAQ is posted monthly to news.answers, comp.answers and
comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.misc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
What Is This Problem?
=====================

This incompatibility causes crackling in the sound during video animations in
high resolution modes in DOS only.

Cause
=====
There is an incompatibility between some Creative Labs sound cards
(the SB16 in particular) and Cirrus Logic based video cards. The
problem is known to both Creative Labs and Cirrus Logic but neither
of them know what the exact problem is!

NOTE that the Diamond Speedster Pro uses a Cirrus Logic chipset and therefore
this FAQ applies equally to this video board.

Cards Effected
==============
I would be interested in hearing about any combinations that work and do not
work. Here is my example:-

SB16 & Orchid Kelvin (CLGD5434) - causes rapid clicking
SBpro 2 & Diamond Speedster Pro - pops and crackles

Programs Effected
=================
The incompatibility is with the VESA bios on the video card and therefore
it only effects games which use VESA. This includes all games which run in
SVGA modes. The following games are known to use VESA.

  * = VESA driver only used in high resolution graphics mode
  The 7th Guest
* Simcity 2000
* Theme Park
* Magic Carpet
* The Need For Speed
  Fatal Racing
  Nascar Racing
  Star Trek the Next Generation
* Wing commander 4
  Transport Tycoon
  Transport Tycoon Deluxe
  Links 386 Pro

There are probably many more. Please email me if you know of any others.

How To Overcome
===============
To overcome the problem is relatively easy. You simply load a dos based VESA
driver for the video card. Cirrus have some drivers on their FTP site which I
believe is ftp.cirrus.com but I could be wrong as I have never gone there. If
you know that it is wrong then please let me know.

I personally use a program called Universal VESA Driver which is a program
that can be used for many different video cards. It is small and apparently
faster than the available Cirrus ones although it is shareware and does nag
when you run it.

The Universal VESA Driver can be found by looking for a filename like
UNIVBE51.ZIP. I obtained my copy from Simtel20 although I expect you could
find it almost anywhere.

Subject: ABOUT THE DATA FORMAT OF WB

... is the name of a web page I put together.

Quote:

The exact protocol of the wb program written by Van Jacobsen has
never been published. We have tried to reverse engineer the protocol
by examining the data that is being sent between several white
boards. We have not been trying to verify if the algorithms for
calculating network distance etc are being used (although it is
probable to think so).

End Quote.

We have built a simple wb-recorder/player, (not for distribution
because of their not-so-steady state, sorry) and I think it will be
quit easy to implement a wb-recorder/player on your own with this info.

It would be great if someone put it into VCR!

Here's the URL: http://www.it.kth.se/~d90-lra/wb-proto.html

I'd appreciate comments on this, if you take the time to read it!

Cheers!

Lars,

Very nice piece of reverse-engineering. Unfortunately, your description
is somewhat misleading and (understandably) incomplete. We haven't
published a low-level description of the protocol because it's highly
experimental and we're going to change it. (A high-level description
of the receiver-reliable multicast transport is described in our
SIGCOMM95 paper.) The wb protocol is more or less the initial cut I did
for a class project in 1992 -- needless to say, we have learned quite
a bit since then from our work on RTP and the audio/video applications.
The next-generation of the wb protocol will adopt much of the RTP
framework, but this merge will require some work. We have a couple
wb-related projects slated for UCB students this Spring and we're hoping
this work will accelerate the dissemination of the wb protocol (and
source code).

I don't think it's that easy to write a flexible wb-archival tool.
In particular, VCR needs to be able to rewind. But there is no
notion of rewind in the wb-protocol (only in the user-interface).
The problem is that timing and reliable-transport are folded together.
The playback tool needs to be able to issue positioning information
indepedent from the timing of the original drawops (and this information
in turn must be reliably delivered).

Subject: ProShare/AT&T Vistium Trade-In Program

Text item: ProShare/AT&T Vistium Trade-In Program

  Ari,

On December 5, 1995, you wrote an email in which you criticized the
merits of the ProShare/Vistium trade-in program. To recap, the program
operates as such; if a current vistium owner buys a ProShare kit, the
client will recieve a second ProShare kit for the trade-in of his/her
Vistium. You went on to imply that the program was rediculous because of
all sorts of techncial advantages of the Vistium product and that it has
a value of 3-4K (because that is what the coustomer paid for it a year
  ago?).

While I do not dispute the technical facts that you identified for the
Vistium product, your knowledge of ProShare and client needs is limited
  because:

  A. The ProShare H.320 software is included with all ProShare kits and it
is a no-charge upgrade for those who don't have it which are very few.
Therefore, it is not an option....It is free!

  B. Perhaps the client would rather have two (2) videoconferecing sites
instead of 1 and the trade in program offers them operational value. If
they could buy another Vistium (and the product had not been
discontinued), their additional cost would be 3-4K. With ProShare, their
incremental cost to add an additional site is 2K. For most clients, cost
is a least as important as technical features and functionality.

  C. The current software release, 1.9 (a free upgrade) offers
  video(capture and display) at 320 X 240 pixels.

  D. It is apparent that you have not considered why AT&T is "shutting
down" Vistium in favour of ProShare?

If you would like to learn more about ProShare, perhaps sign an NDA (Non
Disclosure Agreement), you would see why so many organizations are
choosing ProShare to meet their videoconferencing requirements. There is
  much to learn about G.728, H.261, Indeo, T.12X, H.323, H.324, etc. There
is also much to learn about Intel's participation in the ITU.

I would agree that ProShare can be improved. The virtue of ProShare is
that it will continue to be improved and that the software releases are
free. We already have a proven track record for meeting our commitments
and we can document and demonstrate our commitments for the future.

Anyway, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and I hope Santa
  brings you a new Paradigm.

PS...It wasn't very long ago that I was an independant consultant

many other industry products until I started to evaluate ProShare.
ProShare meets everyone's (Network, Desktop, App Development, Telecom,
User, Finance, Training, Managment, etc.)needs in a organization.

I thought that compliant H.320 was CIF at 352x288. The Proshare Video at
320x240 uses the wrong pixel aspect ratio, ensuring that the picture from
Proshare to a real H.320 system would make everyone look short and fat,
assuming that you could actually make the connection.

My understanding is that ATT underwent a complete corporate fission event,
that resulted in the death of the GIS group, which owned Vistium. This forced
ATT Network systems to replace the Vistium and they chose PictureTel PCS<xyz>
and Proshare.

Dear Dr. Casner,

Dear AV Transport WG member,

Reading your RTP draft, I found deeply interest
in the application of this protocol to the area
of multimedia.
I am conducting my graduate students in this area.
I have been looking for help to find available implementations
of the RTP, but nothing comes out.

Would you please tell me where I can find
RTP (and ST II) implementations or experimental versions
(source codes available are better)
via any FTP site?

Thank you so much,

Dr. Longsong Lin
