Your Invitation to Attend NOMS `96
IEEE/IFIP 1996 Network Operations and Management Symposium
Kyoto, Japan - - - April 15 - 19, 1996

Dear Colleagues:
Join us and your colleagues at NOMS '96, the fifth biennial
symposium in the rapidly evolving area of network operations and
management. NOMS is one of the premier symposia in our profession and is
held in the even-numbered years in collaboration with IEEE CNOM and IFIP
Working Group 6.6. It is an excellent forum for learning and sharing ideas
and experiences with other practitioners and organizations.
NOMS '96 features an outstanding program with twenty-one technical
sessions on important topics and three plenary sessions: one session with
three Keynote speakers providing vision into the future, and two
Distinguished Experts Panel Sessions with participation of exceptional
talent. The symposium will also offer timely and highly relevant tutorials
by subject matter experts on current topics. In addition,
Birds-of-a-Feather sessions will provide the opportunity to participate in
ad hoc focused discussion groups. There will be Poster Sessions to discuss
late breaking topics and to encourage one-on-one and detailed technical
interactions. Demonstrations will feature state-of-the-art ideas in network
management.
The city of Kyoto is prepared to welcome you and to provide you the
cultural experience of a lifetime. Strategically located within the city,
the Kyoto Park Hotel is an outstanding setting for the symposium, central
to all major historical sites in the Kyoto area, and an ideal place to
experience the delightful flavor of traditional Japanese culture and
attractions.
Below you will find a listing of all the technical events during the
four days of the Symposium, followed by a Registration form and
information. You also can get complete details, and complete an on-line
Symposium Registration form on our WWW site at
"http://www.ieee.org/comsoc/NOMS-96.html"
Come to NOMS '96 and be a part of "Managing the Global Information Ag=

Come to NOMS '96 and be a part of "Managing the Global Information Ag=
e."

Theme: Managing the Global Information Age

Message from the General Co-Chairs: An Invitation to Attend NOMS `96

Join us and your colleagues at NOMS '96, the
fifth biennial symposium in the
rapidly evolving area of network operations and management.
NOMS is one of the premier
symposia in our profession and is held in the even-numbered
years in collaboration with
IEEE CNOM and IFIP Working Group 6.6. It is an excellent
forum for learning and
sharing ideas and experiences with other practitioners and
organizations.

NOMS '96 features an outstanding program with
twenty-one technical sessions on
important topics and three plenary sessions: one session with
three Keynote speakers
providing vision into the future, and two Distinguished
Experts Panel Sessions with
participation of exceptional talent. The symposium will also
offer timely and highly relevant
tutorials by subject matter experts on current topics. In
addition, Birds-of-a-Feather
sessions will provide the opportunity to participate in ad
hoc focused discussion groups.

There will be Poster Sessions to discuss late breaking topics
and to encourage one-on-one
and detailed technical interactions. Demonstrations will
feature state-of-the-art ideas in
network management.

The city of Kyoto is prepared to welcome you and
to provide you the cultural
experience of a lifetime. Strategically located within the
city, the Kyoto Park Hotel is an
outstanding setting for the symposium, central to all major
historical sites in the Kyoto
area, and an ideal place to experience the delightful flavor
of traditional Japanese culture
and attractions.

Come to NOMS '96 and be a part of "Managing the
Global Information Age."

I am pleased to report that, despite short notice on the documents and
no agenda in advance, that we had a very productive meeting in LA.

The results of this are clearly summarized in the attached minutes
from Kevin Jordan (thanks for these excellent minutes). I went into
the meeeting with the belief that there were a number of issues which
would be hard to handle. All of the open items had productive and
clear discussion leading to sensible resolution with a high degree of
consensus. I am confident that we will be able to get these
documents rapidly put to bed.

                Minutes of MADMAN Working Group
                           35th IETF
                    Los Angeles, California
                              USA

                    Wednesday, March 6, 1996

Working Group Chair: Steve Kille, ISODE Consortium, Ltd.
Minutes taken by: Kevin Jordan, Control Data Systems, Inc.

1. The minutes of the previous meeting in Dallas were approved.

2. The agenda of the current meeting was approved.

3. Network Application MIB. The group discussed the relationship between
the System Application MIB and the Network Application MIB. A network
application could be defined as a subclass of the generic system
application class, so the System Application MIB could reference the
Network Application MIB in order to realize this hierarchical relationship.

It was decided that the Network Application MIB specification will be
updated to include text which describes its relationship to the System
Application MIB and also the Host Resources MIB. The MIB itself will
not be updated to include any new variables or any direct reference to
   these other MIB's.

4. Directory MIB. This MIB is stable and will be progressed onto the
standards track. However, support for URL's may be added (see point 6).

5. Mail MIB. Changes have been made to this MIB, primarily to reflect
comments and recommendations made by EMA (the Electronic Messaging
Association). The editor solicits comments against the new draft,
especially regarding the new text about conversions and routing loops.

Improvements in monitoring of messaging failures are desirable. However,
making the Mail MIB substantially more complex to support these improvements
is not desirable. Steve and Ned will work together to define and specify
some more failure counters in the MIB (but not very many more).

The Mail MIB specification will be upated to clarify how group hierarchies
can be defined, and some examples will be provided to show how they are
   useful.

6. URL's. Support for specification of URL's will be added to each of the
   MIB's where it makes sense.

7. Traps. The current MIB specifications will not be updated to include
any specific support for traps. Instead, if there is sufficient interest
amongst the working group membership, support for traps will be explored
and specified via separate, experimental documents.

8. Future status. MADMAN will not meet again face to face. All outstanding
work will be completed via e-mail using the MADMAN distribution list.

Summary of action items:

  - Ned will update the Network Application MIB specification to describe its
relationship to the System Application and Host Resources MIB's.

  - Ned will update the MIB's to include support for URL's where appropriate.

  - Steve and Ned will work together to define and document some more counters
in the Mail MIB for monitoring messaging failures.

  - Ned will update the Mail MIB to clarify how group hierarchies are defined
    and used.

Below is a message I sent to applmib WG mailing list along with
Jon Saperia's reply. I beleive the same applies to the latest
draft-ietf-madman-nsm-mib.01.txt (and other drafts/rfcs in the
pipe) as well, except that the framework is section three in
the NSM document.

Carl,

I have copied Jon W. on this so that he can incorporate these comments
into the revision of the draft he is working on. It is my view that:

     1. You are correct about the RFC references. We knew about this
earlier but decided to wait until a bit later. It is now later.
The rfcs which should be referenced as the framework are:

1901 - 1908
     Introduction to Community-based SNMPv2

Structure of Management Information for Version 2 of the Simple
     Network Management Protocol (SNMPv2)

Textual Conventions for Version 2 of the Simple Network Management
     Protocol (SNMPv2)

Conformance Statements for Version 2 of the Simple Network
     Management Protocol (SNMPv2)

Protocol Operations for Version 2 of the Simple Network Management
     Protocol (SNMPv2)

Transport Mappings for Version 2 of the Simple Network Management
     Protocol (SNMPv2)

Management Information Base for Version 2 of the Simple Network
     Management Protocol (SNMPv2)

Coexistence between Version 1 and Version 2 of the
     Internet-standard Network Management Framework

Have I missed any?

I would advise avoiding referrals to the "introduction" document
(which is Experimental, with good reason) if at all possible.

The MIBs should have no need to talk about what encapsulation
is used with their data.

Apart from that - yes, the references need changing.

Glad to......

The "introduction" document for SNMPv2C, RFC 1901, provides a "security"
mechanism for protecting SNMP requests and responses using a cleartext password
(the "community string").
This isn't usable security, and is not presented as that in the document.

The SNMPv2 group more or less comitted collective suicide over the
problem of agreeing to an adequate and manageable solution for SNMP
security, leading to the decision at Dallas to progress the rest of
SNMPv2 to Draft standard, but to label the "introduction" document as
Experimental, because it provided an adequate mechanism for experimenting
with the rest of SNMP, but did not provide the full functionality that
is necessary for proper management of the Internet.

One of the suggested solutions is described in RFCs 1909 and 1910 (the
"User-based security model"), but it has not proven possible to gather
IETF WG consensus on this solution; another, called "SNMPv2*", is in
preparation, I believe.

That's *my* capsule description. Others' take may differ.

Ture, but it is usable SNMP.

> and is not presented as that in the document.

Precisely. RFC 1901 presents a way to use the many improvements
to SNMP embodied in RFCs 1902-1908 in a well-known, well-tested,
and highly backward-compatible way.

There is nothing experimental about that, IMHO.

[Of course, I got beat up the other day on another list
for using the term "worthwhile uses" in the context of
discussion of a proposed protocol feature and failing to
explicitly exclude such worthwhile things as "elimintaing
world hunger" and such...so I am sure someone can find
*something* experimental to do with RFC 1901! :-]

Thank you for the explanation.
