Summary of Requirements Deployment of GMPLS technology in existing IP/MPLS networks It is neither desirable nor practical to expect all routers to be GMPLS aware. The service networks can be non-GMPLS (e.g., all IP or legacy service networks). Need to find ways for (incremental) deployment of the optical regions with minimum-to-no reconfiguration of the existing router region and vice versa. No upgrade in the existing IP/MPLS routers. Be able to make efficient use of resources in a heterogeneous network of routers and optical nodes/ devices. Failure Transparency. A failure in optical network does not affect routing in packet networks, and vice versa. |
